Reflect merge
[edit]It looks like this was merged from European Academic Research Network and Réseaux Associés pour la Recherche Européenne, so wikilinks to those pages should be avoided. I strongly support such merges and think one well-sourced article that gives a coherent narrative is best. My preference would be to rename without the acronym to Trans-European Research and Education Networking Association by the usual rule to avoid acronyms in titles since that seems to be its actual name. But no hurry on that. W Nowicki (talk) 17:50, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
- That absolutely makes sense! --Crusio (talk) 18:06, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
- Personally I don't care, the new name is longer, but it isn't an acronym and the longer name does seem to be used <shrug>. -- Eraserhead1 <talk> 18:27, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
Wow that was quick. Anyway wanted to fill in some of the history first. One thing I ran across is that COSINE promoted the OSI protocols which is much more specific than the OSI model. There seem more sources for the predecessor organizations, but alas many are not online. W Nowicki (talk) 18:49, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
protocols?
[edit]Anything about protocols used in EARN?
- RSCS = Remote Spooling Communication Subsystem
- NJE = Network Job Entry
- NJI = Network Job Interface
- UUCP = Unix-to-Unix Copy

IPA
[edit]Is the stress really on the first syllable? That seems a little unlikely, given typical English phonology. Isn't it 'ter-AY-na'? 60.242.48.18 (talk) 09:53, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
- I always put it on the second syllable when I worked with them (and would probably divide it up as ter-E-na), but I'm Norwegian, and don't know IPA. Since it's a pan-European organization, the pronounciation may vary. --Alvestrand (talk) 07:44, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
-- Officially, the second syllable should be pronounced as the 'ren' in 'rental'. See http://www.terena.org/about/ga/minutes/gamins-94-12.html, agenda item 11. However, nobody ever pronounces 'TERENA' like that. Haringkop (talk) 20:50, 13 July 2012 (UTC)
