Name

The use of redundant geographical disambiguators is being discussed over at WT:MILLS so I'll leave to one side what happens after the comma in the name. As mentioned in that discussion though, the name of this mill is debatable. The current OS map uses Guston Mill, which is one solid bit of evidence of a contemporary WP:COMMONNAME. In fact the OS seem to have used that name for ages, it appears in the 1873-5 map and accompanying gazetteer. Windmill World also uses Guston. On the flip side, EH use "Swingate Mill" in its listing doc. Google Books splits 7:7 between Guston Mill and Swingate Mill - plus a passing mention to another Guston Mill, a minor watermill up north that had "disappeared long ago" as of 1888 which doesn't appear to represent a serious source of confusion. As a parish and distinct village, Guston is probably more recognisable than the tenuous hamlet of Swingate. So for that reason, and the fact that general readers are more likely to use an OS map than specialist documents like the listing doc, I would tend towards naming this article Guston Mill, although I accept it's pretty 50:50 and there should of course be a redirect from the other name. As I stated at WT:MILLS, Swingate is a hamlet in the parish of Guston. Swingate Mill takes its name from that hamlet. The article should stay at its current title. However, redirects could be created from Guston Mill, Guston Windmill, Swingate Mill and Swingate Windmill. Mjroots (talk) 10:00, 28 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
