On article notability
[edit]i have created a page listing Sway coverage to provide evidence of it's notability. feel free to add to it. I am also considering removing the warning about notability as Sway is not considered a product as mentioned here, also it seems to fit the guidlines in the article (especially about using relatively informal sources for open source software) --Zash 15 (talk) 01:06, 8 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Zash 15: please add the references to the article. Having them in a separate page does not allow reader to verify the article contents. Please don't remove the notability tag until the article has enough sources to show that it is notable. It needs to meet WP:GNG just like any other subject. The Mirror Cracked (talk) 01:10, 8 January 2020 (UTC)
- @The Mirror Cracked: I am hesitant to add the sources, because not all of them would have information that benefits the article (they would make the article harder to read), and i don't want to do more work on this article and then have it deleted because someone thinks it's not notable (I already wrote a draft and put in it a fairly large amount of time, and it got deleted) so i would prefer to reach some agreement about it's notability before making any (if necessary) time consuming edits. I did review WP:GNG and i think it fits the guidelines. iirc i also read somewhere on wikipedia that you can keep a seperate (from the article) list of sources to show an article is notable. - @Zash 15: I'm not sure where you read that, but it is (IMHO) poor advice. Wikipedia's purpose is to summarise information that is published in reliable sources. If you can't cite the sources you are using to create the article, then you are doing original research and that is strictly contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia and is not allowed. Failing to cite sources in the article will likely result in it being nominated for deletion, so you have nothing to lose. You don't have to put everything in a source into this article, but you do have to say where the information came from so readers can verify that information for themselves. Adding sources does not make the article harder to read. There is no way round WP:GNG - you need to cite your sources to show that Sway is notable enough to stay as an article. Sway does not support nvidia
[edit]I don't understand why this edit was removed:
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sway_(window_manager)&oldid=941812174
Simply put, Sway does *NOT* support NVIDIA. The only way it would work is if you use the Nouveau driver, which no serious end-user actually uses since it has known performance issues for over a decade now.
This is obviously a neutrality problem, as the author of this library effectively forces users to purchase AMD cards.
Further to the point, a check for the (closed source, WORKING) NVIDIA driver is actually hardcoded into the source, and you are forced to pass a command line flag:
https://github.com/swaywm/sway/blob/33a984bbc5c5ec4202f24bacf6ddd584b95a9ec0/sway/main.c#L94-L105
After passing that flag, `sway` does not start up.
True, AMD has MUCH better support in their open source drivers (i.e., it's actually usable).
But the author should not be pressing his personal opinion down to users of software, and it should be widely known that he has a personal agenda.

- @Aavindraa: I removed your edit because it was not true. "NVIDIA graphics cards are not supported." is not a true statement. Something like "NVIDIA graphics cards are only supported through the open-source nouveau driver." might be okay, but I am not really sure that the specifics of hardware compatibility are something we should include in this article. Also, as for the idea that "it should be widely known that he has a personal agenda", that is not the purpose of this article, nor is it something worthy of inclusion. - Respectfully, this page consists of nothing but a list of features, all of which are taken from i3. Given that Wayland has already shipped with Fedora and other major distributions, it seems that keeping accurate statements about hardware support is in the best interest of keeping the information neutral. - Regarding "But the author should not be pressing his personal opinion down to users of software, and it should be widely known that he has a personal agenda." Please try to maintain WP:NPOV, I would not oppose explaining the whole wayland/nvidia fiasco (that is nvidia using an API different from the one everybody else uses, promising a replacement that will unite both API and not delivering it for years) which is why only KDE and GNOME support nvidia (a support which is reportedly not very good), i think it should be in the wayland article as it applies to other compositors, with possibly this article referencing the relevant segment Zash 15 (talk) 20:07, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Aavindraa:This page does not "just" consist of a list of features and the features that are listed were not all taken from the i3 page. When I created this page, I took the time to read about and include additional features of Sway that are not featured in i3. Please stop dismissing my work just because you are frustrated about Sway's hardware compatibility. Again, the statement "NVIDIA graphics cards are not supported." is not true and I will continue to remove any such incorrect statements as they appear. However, I would tolerate a fair and unbiased mentioning of some of the specifics of Sway's hardware compatibility. As I said previously, a statement such as "NVIDIA graphics cards are only supported through the open-source nouveau driver." might be okay for inclusion on this page. - Apologies @Hungariantoast:. After reading the latest revisions, the article looks on the way to describing Sway on top of i3. Apologies for dismissing your contribution for adding Sway to Wikipedia. It leaves something to be desired in the development/history though. After 2019, Sway is at 1.6... anything major in 2020 or 2021 so far? Avindratalk 01:24, 7 April 2021 (UTC)
