County question
[edit]- What county is Sunset Park in? Pacian 22:04, 26 April 2006 (UTC)
- County? It's in Brooklyn (per the title of the article), which is of course coterminous with Kings County.--Pharos 02:28, 27 April 2006 (UTC)
- Isn't some of Brooklyn in Queens County? And don't be so tart in your reply: I *LIVE* in Sunset Park, but I'm having a hard time figuring out what County this is.Pacian 23:02, 27 April 2006 (UTC)
- All of Brooklyn is Kings County. I think you may be thinking of The Rockaways, which is off of the southern coast of Brooklyn but is actually connected and part of Queens. --Howrealisreal 23:46, 27 April 2006 (UTC)
- This is correct; Kings County is Brooklyn and little more, and Queens County is Queens. One little qualm: While the Rockaways are part of Queens, the peninsula is not geographically connected to Queens, but rather to Nassau County. —Larry V (talk) 04:29, 28 April 2006 (UTC)
- Sorry to be quick, Pacian. Just remember Brooklyn = King County, for all practical purposes. The borders are exactly the same, it's basically just that, governmentally, "Brooklyn" is used for city matters, and "Kings County" for state matters. Brooklyn effectively has no county government, though, so the only thing under "Kings County" is the courts.--Pharos 06:16, 28 April 2006 (UTC)
- Apology accepted. I asked specifically because I have to approach the courts about obtaining a DBA license, and I didn't know which county clerk to contact! Your help is most appreciated. Pacian 20:43, 29 April 2006 (UTC)
8th Ave pictures
[edit]The photos illustrate how difficult it is to take a good outdoors picture facing south. Recommend that the one that mostly shows buildings in shadow not be used. Jim.henderson 20:45, 21 May 2007 (UTC)
We need some newer pictures of 8th Avenue. Some of those pics are of restaurants that no longer exist. I will submit some new ones since I happen to live on 8th Avenue. BTW, I added a "Recent History" section as I couldn't find a way to mention the recent tornado that passed through my neighborhood. --66.114.67.117 08:05, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, the history arrangement isn't quite kosher. Anyway, please do not get rid of pictures because they are old. Old is good; we want to see the past, except in pictures that are actually bad. Do not add new pictures because they are new. Add them if they are better pictures: straighter, lighter, clearer, neater, more precisely illustrative. The dragon dancer pictures present something of a quandary, being beautiful but not evocative of place. Jim.henderson 08:23, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
Location
[edit]The description of Sunset Park's boundaries appears substantially overstated as of summer, 2007. As usually understood, Sunset Park is bordered by neighborhoods of Park Slope to the north, Flatbush and Borough Park to the east, and Bay Ridge to the south. Few people would think of it as including the Red Hook waterfront neighborhood.
History of Row Houses including 552-49th Street in Sunset Park, Brooklyn
[edit]I lived at 552-49th street from 1957-1962. Would love to know the history of these quaint rowhouses; i.e.; when built, who lived there, any other pertinent history. Any clues where I can find this info? - --Mzcarol24@hotmail.com
transportation
[edit]I was wondering if the D-train stop at 9th Ave. and 39th St./New Utrecht Ave. should be included in the transportation section of the Sunset Park article, seeing as how 9th Ave. is cited as the eastern border. Any suggestions?Mahoot17 (talk) 14:56, 14 July 2008 (UTC)Mahoot17
Robert Moses
[edit]Yes, Caro's The Power Broker does say that Moses killed Sunset Park by putting the BQE there. But this probably overstates its effect. Sunset Park is most certainly not "effectively cut off" from the marine terminals by the BQE. It is an elevated highway, hence you can drive, take the bus or walk between the two, as people continued to this day. My point is that Caro overstates the case, probably because he wanted to make his subject, Moses, out to be more powerful and thus more worthy of scholarship than he actually was. Did it blight the neighborhood? Of course. But I am happy to see Wiki gets it right INMO: the decline of the harbro and attendant jobs was what led to the decline of property values relative to the surroundings. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.196.3.108 (talk) 18:32, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
No evidence to state that Pakistani's or any particular group is moving to Staten Island
[edit]As of the year 2000, many have been moving to nearby Staten Island.
There's no link or source to back this up, so I'll be deleting this. I really don't think there's much logic to the statement either. Why since 2000? Staten Island grew much more during the 1990's and has arguably just as much immigration, especially from less populated groups, if not more, than Brooklyn. Why would they move to Staten Island anyway? Please don't believe that it'd because of expense, because if that were the case, why wouldn't they just have moved to Staten Island to begin with? Staten Island's population hasn't grown as much since 2000. It's grown by a similar percentage as the national growth, yet 19 percent of the borough is foreign born. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.245.112.131 (talk) 06:34, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
rowhouses
[edit]i think the picture of "typical block in sunset park" needs to be changed to something that is unique to this neighborhood; that something i think is the circular-style rowhouse. an example can be found at my site http://www.nychinatown.org/brooklyn/7thave.html

Sunset is also part of the brownstone belt with many great examples of the era. In the late 80's there where tours of some of the finest examples of brownstones that are still in original condition. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.223.190.192 (talk) 16:55, 28 August 2009 (UTC)
No citation in reference to Indians
[edit]In between
[edit]People from Gujarat, India have also been settling in and around the Sunset Park area since 1974[citation needed]. They are mainly Christian[citation needed] and mostly go to three of the area's churches, at 45th Street and 7th Avenue, 56th Street and 4th Avenue, and 52nd Street and 8th Avenue. These churches have a mainly Indian congregation, and have festive parties in the church halls.
When you get specific with years (1974) and statements (Christianity), it's important to have citation or evidence (which this entire paragraph doesn't have). Therefore, I'll be deleting it. TomNyj0127 (talk)
Chinatown
[edit]I think that Chinatown should be split off into a separate article and expanded. The section is fairly large, and could be expanded with more detail, while leaving a summary here. 70.29.208.247 (talk) 08:06, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

transportation - subway lines
[edit]The transportation section is a little confusing to me, but I am hesitant to make changes because I know a lot of MTA/subway info has a standardized format on Wikipedia.
When mentioning the BMT Fourth Avenue line, it mentions D N R W in parentheses - this is confusing as only the D, N, and R come into Brooklyn, and D the splits off before some of those stations (e.g. 59th). I don't understand why W is mentioned at all, since on the BMT Fourth Avenue line page W is not mentioned.
Also, the 9th Avenue station is mentioned, which I agree is relevant, but it is a little confusing because earlier in the article, it says 8th Avenue is the Sunset Park boundary. Worth noting that on the 9th Ave page, it says that station is in Sunset Park - so maybe we should change the boundaries in this article for consistency? The area is kind of in between neighborhoods.

boundaries
[edit]I have edited the intro section to change the boundaries- specifically, I took out some exact street names, as I think they are debatable and they contrast some other Wikipedia pages as well as things within this page itself.
For example, the 9th Avenue subway stop page says the station is in Sunset Park, but this article said the boundary was 8th Avenue. Also this section mentions the 9th Ave stop. I put it back to be closer to the description in this previous version: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sunset_Park,_Brooklyn&oldid=404170819. From some googling, there are articles out there that support 8th Ave as a boundary, but also some that say 9th Ave. Google Maps shows 9th Ave- in reality, it probably varies depending on what street you're on - I always think of Borough Park's boundary as synonomous with the Orthodox Jewish community, and that community appears to start around 9th Ave in the lower numbered streets but at 8th Ave on some of the higher (south) streets.
Also, now that Greenwood Heights is a neighborhood, is Sunset Park really bordered by Park Slope anymore? Doesn't Greenwood Heights + the cemetery make up the full north boundary? This article said 17th Street was a boundary before, but that seems way too far north than what I'd call Sunset Park, unless you're including the Greenwood Heights area within Sunset Park (which some definitions might).

Finntown (Brooklyn, New York) Location?
[edit]The article on Finntown says that it is in Sunset Park. Can someone say where? I want to add Coordinates, but I need the exact location.--Dthomsen8 (talk) 18:33, 1 October 2017 (UTC)

Improved to Good Article status by Epicgenius (talk). Self-nominated at 01:16, 12 March 2020 (UTC).
- Epicgenius Recent GA, length and general citing not an issue, and no major incidences of plagiarism. QPQ is done, so just the hooks. I think the original hook is the best - I don't really think ALT2 is that interesting and I have concerns with ALT1 - the article mentions "South Brooklyn residents" and not Sunset Park. Juxlos (talk) 21:09, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
- @Juxlos: Thanks for the review. "South Brooklyn" was an old name for Sunset Park as mentioned in the article. epicgenius (talk) 22:01, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
- Oh, fair enough. Regardless, I still think ALT0 is better as ALT1 is quite a bit longer. Juxlos (talk) 22:10, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
Panorama FP?
[edit]This picture of the Sunset Park waterfront, taken from Bush Terminal Park, was recently promoted to FP on Commons. I went to add it here, but adding a panorama can be tricky and it might just be too wide so I figure I'll leave it here and defer to others. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 02:18, 25 February 2021 (UTC)
