why so much..?
[edit]Why so much focus on her Indian heritage? What about her Slovenian heritage? Isn't that important too? And what about her American heritage (to be picky)?
Me again.. I guess from the evidence that maybe India is more meaningful to Sunita than Slovenia :) But there is no way to tell for sure. Oh well... my complaint is not important.
why not? if people have info about her slovenian side, that is relevent, then I you should add it. Most half-white/half-non-whites in america are considered soley the latter, in most americans eyes. To most people she is indian, not european.
she belongs from....?
[edit]Is there anyone who know where?
She has Indian origin, but was born in Ohio, US.

Um..
[edit]This entire article is copied from her astronaut bio page: http://www.jsc.nasa.gov/Bios/htmlbios/williams-s.html —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Elgringo18 (talk • contribs) 18:39, 7 December 2006 (UTC).
- As it is written in Talk:Christer Fuglesang, NASA work is generally in public domain, that is allowed to copy freely. -- BIL 16:14, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
Deepak Pandya
[edit]- Why has the information, that her father, Deepak Pandya, is a famous neuroanatomist, been removed? I thought that it was an interesting piece of trivia. Hektor 21:15, 17 December 2006 (UTC)
Removed Hindi name
[edit]I've removed the Hindi version of her name. It really has no place on the article, because although she is of Indian descent, Sunita Williams is a citizen-by-birth of the USA. For all practical purposes, she is an American. Had she been born in India and then become a naturalized citizen of the US (like Kalpana Chawla), the Hindi name would have been appropriate. Max 06:39, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
- Why did u remove it. Her roots is from Gujarat, India. On Wednesday Sunita talked to Indian school students. chek this http://www.ndtv.com/template/template.asp?id=99226&template=Sciencetech&callid=1&frmsrch=1&txtsrch=Sunita+Williams Guddu 11:30, 12 January 2007 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rajeshroshan (talk • contribs) 06:30, 12 January 2007
- I agree that her roots are Indian, but she was born in the USA. She's a second-generation Indian, if I may put it that way. There are a lot of famous people in the US (with articles written about them on Wikipedia) who are second-generation offsprings of immigrants, but their names are not written in their native tongue. Case in point - Noam Chomsky. His mother was from Belarus and his father was from Ukraine. But in the article, Chomsky's name is not written in Ukrainian/Belarusian/Russian, is it? You will find many other examples of this sort if you look carefully.
- Coming to your second point, just because she talked to Indian students doesn't make it a rock-solid reason to include her name in Hindi does it? Again, let me repeat that I don't deny her Indian roots, but in keeping with Wikipedia policy, it is best not to include her name in Hindi.

This article is in Wikiproject India
[edit]- i have added hindi name, earlier i have mentioned the valid reason for this. Guddu 11:40, 12 January 2007 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rajeshroshan (talk • contribs) 06:40, 12 January 2007
Perhaps u didnt eye on the menu This article is in Wikiproject India. May i know from you why it is belongs to Indian Project. Is there any one who give me the reason. i am waiting for the answer. - The article is in WikiProject India because a bot (LostBot), which is an automated script, tagged it as an India-related article. In the words of the bot owner, "If an article is in the India category or subcategories they will get flagged as being part of the India project". Now this is absolutely fine, because this article does fall under some India-related categories (Category: Indian Americans and Category: Gujarati people to be precise). But I do not think that this categorization alone makes it a valid reason to add her name in Hindi. I have already explained my rationale behind removing the Hindi name in my previous entry on this talk page. There may not be a written rule or guideline about this (atleast I haven't read any), but going by other articles of people having similar status (offsprings/descendants of immigrants who were born in the USA and are American citizens by virtue of their birth), I believe that the Hindi name is not very relevant. However, to be sure, I will consult an admin about this and let you know his/her opinion.

- I agree with Max. A Hindi transliteration of anything that falls under the Indian project or is remotely connected to India is not necessary. - Aksi_great (talk) 14:08, 16 January 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you for your input, Aksi. Rajeshroshan, Aksi is an Indian admin. I hope that his comment clears your doubt. Have a nice day! - Max 16:43, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit]Why not talk more of the marathons she did? Boston, Houston ...

Additional NASA profile
[edit]Hey yall. http://www.nasa.gov/astronauts/s_williams_profile.html is a talkier, more readable biographical sketch than the first link listed at the bottom of the article. It's less of "DOB, rank & service" than "how did this [admittedly] mediocre student come to be an astronaut?"
Anyway, fine work, and congrats are owed in the general direction of Ms. Williams for breaking S. Lucid's space endurance record.Eh Nonymous 09:56, 17 June 2007 (UTC)
Has she accepted Islam?
[edit]I read somewhere in news paper that she has accepted Islam after seeing some lights only on two spots on the earth from space while whole earth was in dark, and those two spots were The Holy Mosques in Macca and Madina after exploring by telescope from space. So if anyone has information regarding this please share, Thanx.(Dr.Azeez,India)202.141.140.250 07:10, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
- This is a known hoax circulating around muslim websites. No reliable source has ever confirmed it. To all trying to add this info in the article: please do not do this unless you have some reliable source to back the information. By reliable I mean either a recorded statement by Sunita Williams, or a reference to the fact from an accepted (preferably non-muslim) news organization. --Ferengi 10:05, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
Removed an 'Accepted Islam' edit. --Buck (talk) 02:06, 14 November 2011 (UTC)
Perhaps there should be a brief new section addressing the hoax? Scanning through the article history, it appears that there are frequent attempts to add a mention of her converting to Islam, which are removed just as quickly. These are often one sentence with dreadful grammar added in a completely random spot, or a copy & paste paragraph from a poorly translated Muslim website that perpetuates this hoax. A new section that addresses the hoax could help prevent this. It can say that there has never been any indication from Williams herself, who is actually a practicing Hindu; and that the myth often involves her traveling to the Moon rather than the ISS, which is not even remotely accurate. I would be willing to write it if there are no objections. Klopek007 (talk) 10:25, 27 November 2011 (UTC)
- Including mention of this non-notable "hoax" in the main article would give it credence that it does not deserve. I would leave it out. Rillian (talk) 18:45, 27 November 2011 (UTC)
- Today I removed the lines which claim she has converted to Islam along with some unscientific facts and non trustworthy references. Can anyone try to semi protect this page ? because this vandalism is happening again and again.Castroby (talk) 18:06, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

"Indian American"
[edit]Why does the first sentence identify her as "Indian American". Her only nationality is American and she was born in the United States. Other second generation people on Wikipedia (Noam Chomsky, Mindy Kaling, just did a quick check based on people who came to mind...) are only listed as American, details about her ethnicity can go under "Early Life". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.97.218.81 (talk) 18:57, 16 January 2013 (UTC)

Texas or Oregon
[edit]"Williams is married to Michael J. Williams, a federal police officer in Oregon. The two have been married for more than 20 years, and both flew helicopters in the early days of their careers. They reside together in suburban Houston, Texas."
Does he really work in Oregon and live in Texas?
