where is the history?
[edit]This article is very scant on the history of the SFF. Anyone care to contribute? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sojmed (talk • contribs) 17:07, 31 December 2009 (UTC)
1972 or 1974
[edit]The article states the festival started in 1972 yet this BBC article[1] put it at 1974. Any thoughts? --Salix (talk): 22:55, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
BBC history articles tend to be a bit journalistic cut-and-paste with dubious accuracy, however reading the one you mentioned it's not too far off the mark whilst missing some significant details. The confusion of dates seems to be that the SFF took on the title of being "The People's Free Festival" which started at the Windsor Free Festival in 1972. WFF had the involvement of Wally Hope who was the main inspiration/organiser for the first SFF, and the last WFF somewhat intertwined with the first SFF. I'm hoping to add more info to this article when time allows. HTH BorisAndDoris (talk) 22:04, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
1984?
[edit]In "Experiencing the Past" by Michael Shanks, on page 47, "The festival was surpressed in 1984, violently prevented from gathering in 1985, abolished since in the name of archaeology". There is nothing in this article about any 1984 "surpression". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 46.64.242.156 (talk) 18:07, 30 January 2014 (UTC)
1984 suppression
[edit]I would also like to challenge the accuracy of the claim that the festival was suppressed in 1984, as I was in the UK in 1988 and attended the Stonehenge Free Festival that year. This is not just my recollection, I have found newspaper cuttings from the Times, Guardian and Independent dated 22 June 1988 with coverage of the event. It may have been the last year, as I think that by 1989 the police were stopping travellers at the Wiltshire county limits.
