performances claim
[edit]The article has a cite reported from the New Grove from 2006 that claims his works have had "thousands" of performances. That's quite a claim for any living composer in recent times, unfortunately - just reflects what the public at large wants to hear. While possible, if we take 2000 as the figure divided up over 40 years of composing - however, in his first years he would be basically unknown - so, for example, over THIRTY years that would mean some 65 performances a year, spread over the U.S.A. (he would be almost totally unknown in Europe and elsewhere-no reflection on his music.) I did not tag the statement as dubious, but would like some clarification. I do not consider high school recitals and so on here - I mean professional performances in concert halls and at university functions. I don't know how the Grove arrived at this figure - they may be relating record company promotional material, which has a tendency to exaggerate. If the editor(s) did their homework and actually sought out numerous newspaper announcements or diary info, that would be different. But going by how difficult it was for even William Schuman - who was a known figure to the public - to have his works performed in an era where classical music was more popular (the graying of the classical music concert attendance has been a concern for years) - I question this figure.
