- ... that the statue of Heracles in Arcachon, France has a detachable penis that is only installed on special occasions? "It is not the first time that the statue’s penis has caused problems. When the statue was erected in the Parc Mauresque in 1948 to symbolise the valiant struggle of the French Resistance against the Nazi occupation, a number of influential ladies of Arcachon complained that it was over-endowed. The sculptor, Claude Bouscau, was twice forced to shorten the phallus to render the statue inoffensive in their eyes." from: Chazan, David (20 April 2016). - ALT1:... that the penis of the statue of Heracles in Arcachon, France was twice reduced in size following complaints from local ladies? "The three-metre statue, which stands in a park in Arcachon, south-western France, was deprived of its member so often that the local council decided it would be best to leave it off — except during public events or ceremonies. ... We chose the option of making a removable prosthesis which is placed on the statue before each ceremony." from: Chazan, David (20 April 2016). Photo of particulars
[edit]I enjoyed the article – another fine feather in the cap of Dumelow. However the article lacks an obvious feature, just like the statue – there are no photographs of the particular details discussed in the article. These are easily found elsewhere on the Internet so I suppose that there may be some bureaucratic obstacle. Mike Peel may know more as we were discussing this sort of issue just yesterday. - Hi Andrew, thanks! I looked but could not find a freely licensed photograph of the actual sculpture. I am not familiar with French copyright law, possibly there is some limit on freedom of panorama there - Dumelow (talk) 11:56, 28 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Andrew Davidson and Dumelow: I'm not sure I can help much. There is no FoP in France, and fr:Claude Bouscau died in 1985, so it's probably going to be 2056 before this article can be illustrated. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 13:53, 28 June 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for confirming Mike Peel, I though it might be something like that. I'll put a note in my diary... - Dumelow (talk) 14:33, 28 June 2021 (UTC)
