Standish is Not a Village
[edit]A 'village' doesn't have three supermarkets, several pubs, restaurants, shops and banks and a large industrial estate. Not to mention thousands of houses on several large housing estates. A 'village' doesn't cover a greater area, or have a higher population than the City of London. (City of London = 1.2 sq miles / pop. = 9,500 - Standish = 5.1 sq miles / pop. = 13,500)
Standish Township
[edit]Wigan MBC state - "Wigan has ten townships”
The following is from a Wigan.gov.co.uk document "Township - A sub area of the borough with a distinct local identity. Wigan has ten “townships”, township plans and forums are in place to identify and address local issues."
Standish is one of the ten. (According to Wigan Council) (and they should know)
- Please learn to leave your signature after posts. Anyway you are incorrect, Wikipedia says that not the MBC. Wikipedia is referencing something that no longer exists on Wigan MBC website. I have done a search of the website, and also news and media and there are occasional references until around 2009 when it seems to largely disappear. In addition Standish is not presented as "one of the Townships" it is presented as part of a township formed by 3 areas of Aspull, Shevington and Standish comprised of a variety of wards. Do not misrepresent sources and / or find a source to support your assertions. Koncorde (talk) 19:16, 22 July 2019 (UTC)
Images
[edit]Here are some images of Standish, now loaded to Commons, that might be useful. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 20:48, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
- I've replaced one of the photos in the article with one of yours as it was a slightly wider angle and had more striking colours. There are some interesting photos there, hopefully room can be made for the Eagle and Child too. Nev1 (talk) 20:55, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
- I have replaced the main image also. Is it an improvement? I think the 1829 Sunday School is of particular note. I also have a few detailed shots of St Wildrid's that I'll try and copy to the Talk page there. The ones of the church interior by Alexander Knapp, already at Commons, from geograph, are all pretty good - alas, I couldn't get into the church today, to take any new ones, as it was organ practice! That's why wiki has ended up with so many new town shots. Haha. Martinevans123 (talk) 21:07, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
- I reckon you're right about the school too. I like the idea of the previous lead photo: a shot down the road towards what seems to be the village's most striking feature. But the colour was a bit washed out and the cars didn't help add interest. Your photo is an improvement IMO, though a little dark at 250px. Nev1 (talk) 21:14, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, I know what you mean. I tried to load a lighter version. There's also this one of the town cross and stocks. But I'll let other editors decide what should be used. Martinevans123 (talk) 21:18, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
