Dual international?
[edit]Did Mortenson play full international matches for any team other than England? He has been added to a category that would suggest that he had, but the article says nothing of it. Kevin McE (talk) 00:21, 10 December 2007 (UTC)
- I think it was a case of a mistaken copy-and-paste on Djln's behalf. - Dudesleeper · Talk 10:47, 10 December 2007 (UTC)
= = Hat Trick? No, Much Repeated Myth
Mortensen was NOT the first man to score a hat-trick in a Wembley cup final. Having watched the game recently on DVD (and analysed it in some detail), Mortensen's first 'goal' was a clear own goal. His shot was not deflected into the net (which would in the modern game would see it given to Mortensen as 'shooter') but re-diverted into the net by a Bolton defender. The shot would almost certainly have been saved by the goalkeeper, being a ground shot of no special pace heading directly for him (he was anticipating such an action).
Importantly, in his commentary, Kenneth Wolstenhome (BBC) did not credit this first Blackpool goal to Mortensen, and therefore - unsurprisingly - did not credit him with having scored a hat-trick at the time of his final goal (from a free kick) or at the end of the game.
Many books and sound commentaries have repeated the mistake, causing history to have been re-invented. This should be corrected.
