Strings alone?
[edit]We call it a suite for string orchestra, and categorise it as a composition for string orchestra. But we also say Holst added wind parts. I'm unsure if this means the piece as normally played today is confined to strings alone, or includes winds, or there are 2 versions which conductors can choose from. Can anyone enlighten me? -- Jack of Oz [your turn] 22:24, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
- Holst prepared this piece originally for a girls' string orchestra. If you need a source, I'll locate one. Bob the WikipediaN (talk • contribs) 16:20, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
- I got sidetracked, sorry. OK, so the original version was for strings alone. Are we saying he later wrote a different version, with winds added to the strings? Is this windy version ever played or recorded? (I've only ever heard the work referenced as St Paul's Suite for Strings). -- Jack of Oz [your turn] 11:26, 17 August 2011 (UTC)
- I'm not aware of any wind ensemble or concert orchestra versions that he wrote; these may be arrangements of his work by other people. Bob the WikipediaN (talk • contribs) 19:15, 17 August 2011 (UTC)
