Neapolitan= dialect of Naples or Southern Italian dialects?

This article overlaps the current Neapolitan language article, which assumes the term applies to southern Italian dialects and not just Naples (thanks to Ethnologue, I think). I prefer this "southern Italian" angle, which is closer to actual linguistics, but the other article should be modified and the bulk of the info from there brought here. Neapolitan = the language of Basile, Cortese, 'O sole mio; Southern Italian = many dialects of common people in Abruzzo, Lazio, Campania, Molise and much more... I think you're wrong when you say that we should merge this with Neapolitan language. The article is based only on phonetical division of Southern Italian dialects. Neapolitan language's page refers to tradition and literature, and it should treats phonology as a secondary issue. So if en.wiki has both a page of Italian language and one of Tuscan dialect why we shouldn't find here an article about Neapolitan language and the one about Southern Italian dialects? I don't think you understood my comment. I'm suggesting making the distinction clearer. The two articles are currently speaking about the same thing. Neapolitan language says "According to Ethnologue, the Neapolitan dialects are grouped as a separate Romance language called Napoletano-Calabrese[5], and are spoken throughout most of southern continental Italy...". Except for passing reference to how many use the term for the idiom of Naples, it really says the same things but using the different name. I agree with what you say, but this does not represent what is written. By the way, if we use the "Southern Italian" to mean what Ethnologue calls Napoletano-Calabrese, wouldn't Neapolitan simply be a dialect of Southern Italian? I tried the language–dialect thing for a few years, but it didn't take. People editing don't understand the difference, and people who understand haven't bothered to edit. Plus, the only thing the language article provided was a list of the places in the language map. So I merged them as 'Neapolitan language'. Maybe when the article is better developed, someone might want to restart Campanian dialect or Naples/Neapolitan dialect. — kwami (talk) 07:00, 15 September 2012 (UTC)

I'm completely agree ! (Song' anche je 'e Napule!) Neapolitan-Calabrian languages are romance languages derived from Latin language , to call they "Southern Italian" is as to call Catalan language with the name "West Spanish" ... Neapolitan (Napoletano-Calabrese) is the official name of the language , why this page is named Southern Italian ( a name that in Italy no-one uses !) ? The term 'Southern Italian' suggests that Neapolitan is a derivation from Italian language , but it's false , Neapolitan is a romance language derived from Latin language !
