Silvanus and Selvans

[edit]

It looks to me that the 2 are different deities as Dorcey points out. The only common trait is the protection of field boundaries. The similarity of the names caused some confusion on both sides perhaps. In Ovid the Silvani are presented as dwellers of the woods who strive to achieve the heavenly realm. Selvans is a god that may best be related to Semo Sancus. Sometimes the inscriptions have Silvanus for Sancus or Tec Sans.Aldrasto11 (talk) 12:35, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Silvanus and Helios?

[edit]

Curious why the picture of Silvanus states behind it "This is the Roman God Helios(Sol)"? Walther Faunus (talk) 11:05, 11 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The text behind refers to another adjacent exhibit of the Roman god helios. Theroadislong (talk) 11:58, 11 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Etymology

[edit]

is a derivation from Latin silva ('forest, wood')...

The etymology of silva is unclear.

How is it unclear? 120.29.109.137 (talk) 07:01, 3 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Basis for LGwhatever Claim? Recommendation for Category\Portal Deletion

[edit]

I looked up this article because of sylvan's etymology and noted the LGwhatever claim, except I can't see the basis for it in this piece. The tag was added 15:46, 29 November 2016‎ by FábioEscorpião - apparently a non-existent user. On 14:42, 31 December 2022‎ Deiadameian added the LGwhatever banner to the Talk page.

I've looked and relooked at the article but see no evidence justifying the changes, in fact the article itself states Silvanus was referenced as a "... protective god of raiding for women and cattle". That doesn't sound like LGanything to me. There's no notes or explanation for the changes, they were just made and were then ignored with subsequent changes baking them in.

I doubt this article gets much traffic but I want to propose both of these be removed unless evidence justifying the connection can be identified. Obviously Talk's Religion, Mythology, Classical Greece and Rome, and History portal links make sense, as do the Nature gods, Roman gods, and Martian deities categories in the article.

I'll give this a bit and assuming no protest - yes I'm assuming anyone actually looks at this, I'll try to come back and make the proposed changes. 人族 (talk) 08:20, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
