Extra Data references

I see that most of the references showed in the section Influences and references were taken almost verbatim from a spanish spoken website (http://www31 . websamba . com/silent_hill_dawn/Silent_Hill_Easter_Eggs.htm) with data included on some forums like Silent Hill Forum. Some of the data were just translated from spanish and references like Blue Bell and the Coca Cola logo I found them only on that particular fansite and some other forums posted by the same author in spanish and english.--189.157.112.106 (talk) 14:51, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

Check this out

Wikipedia= The shop called simply "8" is a graphic parody of Seven-Eleven.

Fansite= 3.- La tienda llamada simplemente "8" es una parodia gráfica de los Seven-Eleven

Wikipedia= At the intersection of Matheson and Bachman there is a building titled "Poston Market," in reference to Boston Market.

Fansite= 16. En la intersección de las calles Matheson y Bachman hay un local de nombre Poston Market el cual recuerda a los restaurantes Boston Market.

Wikipedia= On Wilson street, among the local sale of hot dogs and salmon, is Flowers on Lexington.

Fansite= 17.- En la calle Wilson, entre el local de venta de Hot Dogs y la pescadería Salmon, se encuentra una sucursal de Flowers On Lexington.

I think someone is using a translator here and giving no credit.

Lord of the Flies?

I don't find this addition too believable. Is the only thing you're going on the conch as the Gas station sign? Cause I think when I wrote the conch shell part, it might have been a snail shell instead. --Thaddius

I have removed this reference since I went back through the game and discovered that the 'conch' that I labelled earlier is actually a snail-shell. --thaddius

Removal of the "full plot"

The current plot is untrue... it's also very messy. I'm going to remove it, there are so many different theories of how the plot really goes there can't be just one "full" theory, and there's too many theories to put them all down. If someone disagrees and thinks the plot should stay, please state why, keep in mind that you thinking this plot theory is correct is not a valid reason. Code E 05:46, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

It looks like someone took aspects of the Film's plot and superimposed them on the game's plot. --Thaddius 16:00, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
I looked into it and some of that info was revealed in the Boy Scenario in the Silent Hill Play Novel for GBA. But it still shouldn't be there. --Thaddius 16:38, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

Audry Jr.

Someone keeps changing the name Audry Jr. to Audry II in the pop culture references section. In the original Little Shop of Horrors the plant is called Audrey Jr. The sign in Silent Hill also says Audrey Jr. Please stop changing it. --Thaddius 16:08, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

Quote from The Little Shop of Horrors:
"The Little Shop of Horrors tells the story of a nerdy young florist's assistant named Seymour Krelboyne, an employee of Gravis Mushnik's Skid Row Florist Shop in Los Angeles. The incompetent Seymour is about to be fired by Mr. Mushnik when Audry, another employee, urges him to bring out a mysterious new strain of plant that he's been tinkering with. Seymour, who has a secret crush on Audry, names the mysterious plant after her. Mushnik gives Seymour one week to see if the "Audry Jr" plant improves his lacklustre business."
Someone keeps changing it and they're anonymous. It's rather annoying. --Thaddius 02:24, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

'Official' Ending

Someone keeps changing the endings senction to say that one of the game's endings is the 'official' one acording to Konami. Post the reputable link with the article where you're getting this info and we'll review it, otherwise, stop posting it. --Thaddius 12:59, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

It's definately oneof the good endings (as it has to lead on to SH3), but I couldn't say which one. Another thing about endings: I watched them on YouTube, and the descriptions here for the good endings seem quite off. There's no mention of the Nurse or anything, and I don't remember him turning to camera thinking 'this isn't right'! --JaffaCakeLover 31:39, 2 September 2006 (GMT)

Ah, you're right there is no mention of Lisa grabbing ahold of Kauffman, I'll add that in a minute. As for Harry's thoughts I guess it probably shouldn't be there. He definally does look around, looking rather confused but it doesn't nessesarily mean he's thinking "this isn't right". That comment makes it seem like it's the wrong ending, but as far as I'm aware there is no true ending. I too have read about one of the endings being "confirmed" in Silent Hill 3, but I also heard there were many loose ends that didn't truly confirm it. But, Having not played Sh3 yet I wouldn't know for sure. Code E 23:44, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

Having done further reading you're right JaffaCakeLover, won't say the reasons why on this talk page as it's a spoiler to SH3, but they do have good reason for adding that it is the "official" ending Thaddius. Code E 00:20, 3 September 2006 (UTC)
Konami themselves have stated that there is no 'official' ending and that each ending is it's own unique story arc. For that reason there is no 'official' endings because they all are 'official'. When I added the endings I had Lisa in there but someone seems to have removed it at some point. No idea why. --Thaddius 17:53, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

I've played some of the NTSC version and finished the PAL version once for now. I think (I'm not sure though) that some things differ between these two, and that's why, for example, some claim that Lisa draggs Kaufmann to hell, some claim that she doesn't. I think this because I think some things on the beginning are different if you compare PAL and NTSC versions of the game. Since I do not own NTSC version anymore, I can't confirm this information as 100% corrrect, but if someone knows, tell this please. --Hippy Tesla 23:44, 17. Jully 2008 (GMT + 1)

Well, either the good+ ending or the good ending is the official (canon) ending because both endings involve Harry escaing with a newly created baby (Seeing as how u play as his daughter in SH3 that would make sense). Seeing as how Cybil isn't in SH3 and Harry is it is safe to say that she died in SH1 (Making the good ending the canon ending). Although she could have escaped SH with Harry (making the good+ ending canon) and died sometime later. So even though we still don't know what the Canon ending is if you look at the facts you could narrow your choices down to only two possible endings. Cybil's fate is mentioned in the latest installment in the series, Silent Hill: Homecoming. Deputy Wheeler tells the protagonist, Alex Sheperd and Elle Holloway about a police woman from Brahms who went to Silent Hill on a case and never returned home. The only evidence left of Cybil was her motorcycle, which was found crashed on the road to Silent Hill. So it is to be assumed, based on this information and the fact that there was no mention or appearance of Cybil in Silent Hill 3, that Cybil never escaped from Silent Hill and was most likely killed by Harry Mason out of self defense when she attacked him at the amusement park while in her possessed state. Therefore this would make the good ending the official (canon) ending -- Liquidous Snake

WRONG retard, The good ending is not the canon ending. Wheeler only said that no one knows what happened to Cybil. She could have simply sneaked back into town, backed up her belongings and fled town to start a new life. If you had paid attention while playing SH: Homecoming, you would have learned that Wheeler said that The Order is one to bear a grudge. They don't take kindly to people that don't share their beliefs. And they are known to have the ability to track people down. And in the translated book of memories, Silent Hill Hiroyuki Owaku stated that Cybil's fate is "left to players' imaginations".

Also, SH4 revealed that SH2 protagonist James Sunderland disappeared when he went to Silent Hill. Does that mean he died too? NO, not at all.

PLEASE pay attention when you play video games.

Thank you. ;)

Deleting random info?

A user at IP 68.57.135.143 keeps deleting large portions of the article for no apparent reason. Sign your changes or mark them here. What you're doing is considered vandalism. --Thaddius 11:44, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

Clearly it's you FlareNUKE who has been doing this. You've done the same on nearly every SH page. Justify your reasons here or stop doing it. --Thaddius 02:02, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

Don't be ridiculous, that's was not my IP when I deleted it! Do not make such accusations! Anyways, the reason I deleted SOME PARTS of the TRIVIA section was because that same trivia was in every Silent Hill article, nobody wants the same info, so I thought it would go better on the main Silent Hill page. --FlareNUKE 07:05, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

Sorry of accusing you, but you were known to have been deleting things all over. I realized after I posted all that that I might have been wrong. The random IP guy left everything disjointed. The fact reamins though that you did delete stuff here without discussing it or justifying it. Please don't delete anything else without mentioning it in the history or at least discussing it here. --Thaddius 15:15, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

Play Novel

I'm wondering if we can get a detailed explaination of the Silent Hill: Play Novel as so far the description only mentions the Sping Boy Scenario and that you can 'use' Cybil in the game. I'm aware that it retells the original game and that it has a story for Cybil, which was supposed to be in the original game, but was scrapped before release, and that there are 4 scenarios for Andy, but I know no specific details. Any help would be much appreciated. --Thaddius 14:35, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

Michael G

Does anyone have any source on who this guy is? It's pretty obvious "Michael G" is a fake name to get around union rules. I've heard rumblings that it's Thom Huge who played Jon on "Garfield and Friends" (believe it or not). Anyone know? Thedoorhinge 19:16, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

Erm, what does this have to do with this game? --Lenin and McCarthy | (Complain here) 21:05, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

Michael G is the actor credited as Harry Mason in Silent Hill; Harry is the main character. Thedoorhinge 13:58, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
I have found nothing to verify that Michael G isn't his name. It is certainly possible that it is a 'fake union related name' but there's no sources on this, sadly. --Thaddius 13:08, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Michael G is Michael Gough. He has voiced characters in many other video games. Coozins (talk) 23:46, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

Actually, I believe Michael Gough said that he did not play Harry Mason. See: HereThe Gazel Ministry (talk) 15:52, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

For the curious, Thom Huge has emailed me: "To be honest with you, I'm not sure. I've done voice work for a number of video games but cannot for the life of me recall any specifics. Sorry to not be of more help. Game on! Cordially, Thom Huge". My ears tell me he's Harry. And that's original research in a big way. Thedoorhinge (talk) 04:33, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Compatibility Issues

On PS3, the original Silent Hill has a sound glitch. Whenever you shoot an enemy, the game's sound is replaced by a loud buzzing noise that doesn't stop until you go to another area or certain animations play. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.30.107.86 (talk) 05:07, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Silent Hill front.jpg

Image:Silent Hill front.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

WP:VG assessment

Definitely in the upper regions of Start-Class, but there are still a few issues which are preventing this article from getting further:

  • Lead needs expansion per WP:LS: summarise the whole article in two or three paragraphs.
  • Could do with more citations: WP:CITE.
  • There are a lot of one- and two-sentence paragraphs throughout the article, particularly in the Reception section. Try merging some of these together as the brevity of these paragraphs makes the article less smooth to read.
  • External links in the Influences section need to be converted into in-line citations thingies.
  • Any information for a Development section? Given the age of the game it wouldn't surprise me if no information was available on the Internet, but you never know.
  • The plot section seems unfinished: you should summarise the entire story rather than give a back-of-the-box-style blurb.
  • Reception section could do with expansion. Have a look at some articles at WP:VG#Example articles to get an idea of how to do this.

Expansion of the plot and Reception section along with more references would get this article up to B. Hope this helps, Una LagunaTalk 12:37, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Endings

Yasharx's mentioning of extra "items" collected to cause another, alternate ending altogether cannot be based upon referenced choppy footage on YouTube.--Tataryn77 (talk) 02:44, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

Snow versus Ash

A silly point, but someone changed all the instances of 'snow' in the description to 'ash'. I just wanted to take the time to point out that the movie took creative licence and revealed the precipitation to be ash, but in the game Dr. Kauffman specifically states that there is snow falling outside - Dr. Michael Kaufmann: "And it's snowing out, this time of year. Something's gone seriously wrong." This quote followed the first instance in the article where snow was mentioned. --Thaddius (talk) 13:13, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

Censorship: Mumblers

The monsters in the school were the "Child #3 in the NTSC version, as this page http://translatedmemories.com/bookpgs/Pg102-103.jpg says. Take a look at this screenshot: http://www.shtc.silenthillfever.com/s1.%20potw3c.htm As you can see, the Mumblers here have paler skin than the "Child #2" monsters and they don't have a big hole in their faces, only lines. 3 Keys on Levin St

The keys are Key of Lion, Key of Scarecrow and Key of Woodman. NOT Key of Tin man. Also, proof: http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/game/198641.html That wizard of Oz thing isn't correct

Keen observation, but you'll note that in Baum's original 1900 book the 'Tin Man' is actually called 'The Tin Woodman'. The film is what popularized his name as 'The Tin Man', but he is in fact a woodman (that is, a lumberjack) made of tin. The Wizard of Oz trivia still holds true, it was just not worded properly to convey that I suppose. I read the Oz books as a kid so I may have just filled in the blank when I read that trivia point. --Thaddius (talk) 14:58, 7 October 2008 (UTC)
I readded it, as per this clarification. I attempted to clarify the links so as to avoid this confusion in the future. --Thaddius (talk) 15:13, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

Boxart

I'm wondering if the PAL artwork [1] could be used for this article - per actually featuring Alessa relatively clearly. Anyone else feel like changing the convention for this one? --Lenin and McCarthy | (Complain here) 17:28, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

Could do, but then you lose foggy Harry, and Cheryl too. Not too fussed either way. SynergyBlades (talk) 17:40, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
I didn't realize the fog was in that too. And there's Cybil too. --Lenin and McCarthy | (Complain here) 17:54, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
Oh, didn't spot Cybil - looks like Cheryl is putting her foot in her mouth. :D Anyway, what's the policy on boxart, is it to use that of the country of origin? If so, shouldn't we be opting for the Japanese one, perhaps putting the US boxart further down in the article as a point of interest? SynergyBlades (talk) 18:01, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
I thought we used the NA boxart by default because this was the English language Wikipedia. Anyway, the Japanese boxart is a touch boring. --Lenin and McCarthy | (Complain here) 18:03, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
If the game's international release has multiple different covers that vary significantly, up to two can be displayed in the infobox; alternatively, consider only using one cover, selecting the cover of the regional release that has gained the most attention through sales, similar to selecting the most common name for an article via naming convention. I agree about the boring cover. SynergyBlades (talk) 18:05, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

So maybe something like Guitar Hero II with the NTSC and PAL versions, or would that only be fit if it was released on more than one console? --Lenin and McCarthy | (Complain here) 18:12, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

Well, the PAL and NTSC ones do differ greatly, and they do offer something different to the article with their different character images. Up to you, but I'd support having both. SynergyBlades (talk) 18:27, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
