Mountain Range???
[edit]The article says this is a mountain range. If it is then it has the wrong infobox. --DRoll (talk) 12:46, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
Correct elevation from NAVD88 is 11,981'
[edit]There are persistent rumors that the elevation of Sierra Blanca is either 12,003 or 12,005 feet, however the correct elevation as in the source cited is 11,981' Toomuchhiking (talk) 06:20, 10 September 2009 (UTC)
Confusion about NGS data
[edit]The datasheet for the Sierra Blanca benchmark states that the disk is at "summit and highest point of Sierra Blanca mountain" and that the elevation at that point is 11981 feet. This is a NAVD 88 value which was derived using VERTCON from a superseded NGVD 29 value of 11977 feet, which was computed from vertical angle observations ("VERT ANG"). There are two reference marks, RM1 and RM2. The datasheet for reference mark 2 is not available but the datasheet for reference mark 1 gives an elevation of 11982 feet. However, that datasheet states that the "height was scaled from a topographic map" which implies that it is not very accurate. For some information on benchmarks see Benchmarking (geolocating). –droll [chat] 08:50, 10 February 2013 (UTC)
Corrections
[edit]An editor asserted that the peak was 7800 feet above the Tularosa Basin, The Tularosa Valley is at 3,917 feet according to GNIS which makes the difference 8064 feet. I also commented out a statement about the summit being over 12,000 feet. –droll [chat] 04:04, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
