Proposed merge into Nastaʿlīq script article
[edit]The article carries this box, using a merge template:
"It has been suggested that this article be merged into Nastaʿlīq script. (Discuss) Proposed since January 2013."
This prompts me to make several points:
1. Clearly, nobody's cared enough to pursue this merge proposal – either way – in the intervening three and a half years. Yet tidying up the existing articles on the Arabic script, including those on the extensions of that alphabet to other languages, such as Farsi, Urdu, Malay, Cham etc, would help our Wikipedia readers better understand all the peoples involved, and their practical arts such as calligraphy. So I think it's worth trying to improve all such articles. This would be a fine place to start. Just my opinion! Anyway ...
Support merge, since the present article seems to be a typographical variant of the Nastaʿlīq style.
2. I also concur with another editor that Nastaʿlīq is a calligraphic style of the (extended Perso-)Arabic script, so perhaps the main article needs renaming to reflect that.
3. And in the process, I'd also recommend we replace every occurrence of "Nastaʿlīq" with "Nasta'leeq" in places where we'd expect a basic transcription (see WP:AMOS), but keep "Nastaʿlīq" wherever we need a strict transliteration, on the simple grounds that the current transcription uses two characters – ʿ and ī – not available in most typefaces used for English.

I absolutely agree with point 1., and so have instituted the merge (in a rather simple way). Regarding 2. and 3., I don't have sufficient expertise to comment, but perhaps this could now be proposed/discussed on Talk:Nastaʿlīq script. Klbrain (talk) 09:02, 7 August 2016 (UTC)
The contents of the Shikasta Nastaʿlīq page were merged into Nastaʿlīq script on 7 August 2016. For the contribution history and old versions of the merged article please see its history. |
