Full review to follow, but per recent discussions over at WT:DYK, it might be for the best to drop ALT2 as there have been many complaints about there being many "X is the first female Y" hooks as of late. Of the two hooks, I have a preference for ALT0; ALT1 is okay, but I wonder if there would be a way to avoid mentioning "Arkansas" twice in the hook. Narutolovehinata5tccsdnew10:24, 3 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Problem is that there are multiple cities named Little Rock, and I'm not sure if it's clear which Little Rock I'm referring to.
As for the first elected versus first appointed, I can rewrite it without mentioning "first":
I really don't think ALT2a could work either, since in the end it's still basically a "first female X" hook (with first replaced with second), and while personally I'd be fine with such hooks and even like them most of the time, many over at WT:DYK don't and would likely object if it was approved. ALT1a is okay but ALT0 is still the most quirky I think. Narutolovehinata5tccsdnew22:42, 3 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Article is new enough, long enough, and adequately sourced. No close paraphrasing was found, and a QPQ has been done. ALT0 and ALT1a are both cited inline and verified, and are both acceptable; my preference is ALT0, but either hook can be promoted. The only concern is that ALT0's reference doesn't come after the part mentioning her birth in Montreal, but rather a little later into the article; the footnote needs to be duplicated for DYK purposes. I have returned this one from prep as the hook is uninteresting - there are countless people born overseas who have become public servants in the United States. Please find a better hook. Gatoclass (talk) 11:04, 6 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I also thought that the hook was uninteresting, and noticed that the article had no information at all about Priest's work during her 10 years in office. I have now added information and sources about that to the article, and it seems to me that there are a few possible hooks:
ALT4:... that Sharon Priest, Secretary of State of Arkansas, said electoral reform was unlikely unless people declared that democracy had a price, and they were willing to pay it? (170 characters)
ALT5: ... that Sharon Priest, Secretary of State of Arkansas, introduced a program called "Honor a Vet with a Vote", designed to raise awareness "that voting is a precious right"? (169 characters)
ALT3 is pretty good IMO, except that I notice another hook says she was the second woman elected to that position after Nancy Hall, so maybe if the "first woman" bit was dropped from the hook? Gatoclass (talk) 14:03, 6 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Nancy Hall was (apparently) appointed to the position after her husband (who had been elected), died. So Sharon Priest was the second woman to hold the position, but the first to be elected to it. But we could leave out "first woman elected as" from ALT3, and just focus on the new internet. (ALT4 was in 2001, and maybe would make more sense with that information included.) @Gatoclass: I did not receive the ping from @RebeccaGreen: and only read this now. I wish to withdraw the nomination as I am no longer interested in this article. However, I do want to thank you both for your commentary and expanding the article. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 03:41, 7 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I'd be okay with ALT3, but to avoid confusion (since I'm not sure if having the word "elected" is enough to prevent readers from potential confusion), the "first woman elected" part could probably be dropped. Of the three new hooks, ALT5 is probably the catchiest, thought ALT4 is also eye-catching. Narutolovehinata5tccsdnew11:00, 7 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I've added an ALT3a without the "first woman elected" part. I do think that being the first woman elected to the role is worth noting - the role has existed since 1836 (not that the article says that, so unless it's added, we can't include it in the hook). But what she did is also interesting, and with a hook that leads readers to click on the article, readers will learn that she was the first to be elected.
