"the chasm of Hell Pot "
[edit]Does anybody know what this is referring to? The problem is that the district attractions go as far afield as Clapham and Malham, so it could be anywhere. My guess is Alum Pot at Selside. If there is no response, I'll remove it, as in its current form it isn't helpful. --Langcliffe (talk) 12:05, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
I was wondering exactly the same thing! Our nearest guess was that it's an error for Hull Pot, up near Horton. Either way, it can't be counted as an attraction of Settle per se, so I would also vote for it to be removed. I'm also unsure of describing Goredale Scar and Clapham cave as Settle attractions, as they're each 5 miles away.Ozwaldowl (talk) 17:35, 8 November 2008 (UTC)
"Other points of interest are Malham Cove and tarn, the Clapham and Weathercote caves, the chasm of Hell Pot and the waterfall of Stainforth Force (pronounced in the local dialect as 'Stainforth Foss'), the ravine of Gordale Scar, the cliffs of Attermire, Giggleswick Scar and Castleberg, which is the largest outcrop of limestone in Britain[2], standing immediately above Settle itself."
I have severely censored the above on the grounds that Malham, Clapham, and Chapel-le-Dale really don't have much to do with Settle, and the reference to the "largest outcrop of limestone in Britain" is actuallyh a reference to the whole of the Askrigg block! --Langcliffe (talk) 12:23, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
Craven Fault
[edit]I have removed the reference to the Craven Fault from the Geography section as it was ambiguous, and in either case inaccurate. If it implied that Castleberg is the Craven Fault, then it's a cliff not a fault. It's not even a fault scarp, but a fault-line scarp (there's been a lot of erosion in the last 300 million years). If it implied that the fault is also to the east, then the fault would probably actually outcrop under Settle itself. --Langcliffe (talk) 23:12, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

– Clearly not the primary topic. There are at least three uses of the verb "settle" – one scientific, one social, and one legal – that each have more long-term significance on their own than a small town with a population of 2,421. Egsan Bacon (talk) 17:32, 2 November 2014 (UTC)
- Support move. Towns, cities, villages, etc. typically have a qualifier (or locater or something) after the town's name telling us what province or district or state or whatever, the place is located in. A good (opinion) practice to follow here. Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 18:05, 2 November 2014 (UTC)
- Support. Seems extremely confusing to have this tiny settlement as the primary topic. older ≠ wiser 20:07, 2 November 2014 (UTC)
- It's notable for Settle and Carlisle Railway rather than tinyness. In ictu oculi (talk) 07:51, 4 November 2014 (UTC)

- Support, clear lack of a primary topic. bd2412 T 16:18, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
Oppose, no evidence that any other uses are commonly referred to as "settle", much less are likely to be searched for with that term. All of the alleged three other uses are at appropriate non-disambiguated titles; none would be at Settle even if there were no other uses. On the other hand, this is the only article on WP about a topic named Settle. This is a solution seeking a problem. --В²C ☎ 21:40, 3 November 2014 (UTC)see below- There is both an album titled "Settle" and a band named "Settle" - how else do you think those uses are searched for? bd2412 T 21:52, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
- I was going by the nom. Changing my !vote. Thanks. --В²C ☎ 22:02, 3 November 2014 (UTC)

- Support The page view counts for the Settle album[1] are 5-6 times what they are for this town[2]; clearly not WP:PRIMARYTOPIC for that reason. --В²C ☎ 22:02, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
- Oppose the "Settle is/was" test on Google Books gives only this subject, there is no other subject which is notable for a real encyclopedia other than Settle (furniture). The album is not worth discussing. In ictu oculi (talk) 07:38, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
- When I do that search on Google Books, I see many results like Robert Martin, Gordon Stuart Adam, A Sourcebook of Canadian Media Law (1994), p. 808: "An offer to settle may be made at any time, but where the offer to settle is made less than seven days before the hearing commences, the costs consequences referred to in rule 49.10 do not apply". When I look at incoming links, I see at least a few obvious references to topics other than the town, as with Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego ("the Diocese agreed to pay $198.1 million to settle 144 claims of child sexual abuse by clergy"); History of labour law ("in the effort to prevent working people from losing employment, either by their own acts or by those of their employers, or to settle any differences which arise out of controversies relating to wages"); Mediation in Australia ("clauses aim to ensure that if a conflict arises the parties will settle it amicably and fairly"); and List of plants of Cerrado vegetation of Brazil (identifying a botanist as Settle). bd2412 T 18:03, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
Searching in Google books with a given term, which is biased towards older publications, is often not a good indicator for what Wikipedia users searching with that term today are likely to be looking for. --В²C ☎ 19:26, 4 November 2014 (UTC)

- Oppose This is change for changes sake. There are only two contenders, the town and the stick of furniture- all the rest are derivatives in some way. The town can have derivatives- such as Settle RDC or the imaginary Settle, San Serife while the furniture can't. Leave it be.-- Clem Rutter (talk) 20:25, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
- there's more than two. WP:NOUN use noun form, not verb form. But if Wikipedia did use verb forms, then all the noun form locations could exist here. Therefore all the noun-form articles are also viable targets, such as settling, settler, and settlement. -- 67.70.35.44 (talk) 07:35, 5 November 2014 (UTC)
- Angels on a pin head argument. Time would be better spent improving the two articles.-- Clem Rutter (talk) 08:51, 5 November 2014 (UTC)

- Support Not primary topic. Would never even think this is what would be looked at for 'Settle' — Preceding unsigned comment added by 143.65.196.20 (talk) 14:36, 5 November 2014 (UTC)
- Support per nom. The town is not large enough or well enough known to be primary topic here. The piece of furniture is equally notable. -- Necrothesp (talk) 16:07, 5 November 2014 (UTC)
- Support, they both suck because settle is a verb, the noun form of which is settling (maybe bad name) or settlement (a good dab page) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.131.80.54 (talk) 04:46, 6 November 2014 (UTC)
