move to Scullery

Could this be moved to Scullery with a seealso to Scullery maid and to dishwashing? Robert Greer (talk) 15:25, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia citation tool for Google Books

I noticed a number of references are the url to a Google Book link. I though editors might be interested in a tool which takes a link as input and creates a (usually) properly formatted ref.

Use in Britain

The use of scullery as a synonym for kitchen occurs in large parts of the English North and Midlands in addition to Scotland and NI, particularly by older people. This usage may have originated with the construction of large quantities of 'two up two down' terraced housing in industrial areas. As originally constructed, these houses had a coal fired range in the rear living room which was used for cooking and heating, and what was little more than a lean-to shed tacked on the back containing a water supply and sink for washing - the scullery. There was no real kitchen in the modern sense. My mother in Stoke-on-Trent (north west Midlands) (born 1931) continued to refer to the perfectly standard kitchen in her 30s semi-detached house as the 'scullery' until the day she died.
