NPOV?
[edit]Neutral POV Problems: I have flagged the Current Issues section of this article because it contains several unattributed statements, makes assertions that are not cited, and is otherwise problematic in meeting the Wikipedia standard for neutral point of view. I am not the appropriate person to rewrite this section, but request that someone else do so as soon as possible. Sra. Bibliotecaria (talk) 14:25, 16 January 2010 (UTC)

[edit]Rumor has it that 40 schools are being closed next year, and the School District is dissolving. Any confirmation? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.49.44.154 (talk) 18:55, 24 April 2012 (UTC)

Demographic info by school
[edit]Schools with large number of Spanish speaking students as indicated by documents:
- Andrew Jackson School (Philadelphia) - This is known due to the parent association annual report having a Spanish version
According to some 1990s Philadelphia Inquirer articles, these schools had bilingual programs for immigrants:
- Kadaba, Lini S. "An Effort To Speak To More Students The School District Is Extending The Reach Of Its Bilingual Programs." (Archive). Philadelphia Inquirer. October 6, 1998. Alt: http://thenotebook.org/blog/147408/archives-bilingual-education-gets-big-boost
- Schools with Spanish bilingual programs: Potter-Thomas Elementary, Julia de Burgos Middle, and Edison High
- Schools with Chinese bilingual programs: South Philadelphia High School and McCall School in Society Hill (McCall is the zoned school of Chinatown) - The district installed Chinese programs due to lobbying from the Chinatown Parents Association and Asian Americans United - At the time the numbers of Cambodian and Vietnamese speakers each were higher than Chinese speakers
- Schools with Cambodian bilingual programs: Kirkbride Elementary School in South Philadelphia - By 1999 almost 33% of the students were Cambodian, and non-Cambodian students got basic Cambodian lessons
- Schools with Russian bilingual programs: Loesche Elementary School and Rush Middle School in Northeast Philadelphia
- Rush has since become a magnet, but Loesche has linked to Russian and Albanian forms http://webgui.phila.k12.pa.us/uploads/w-/do/w-doOfN0KUj5ryiSRDzUVQ/Parent-Portal-Instruction-Sheet.pdf
As of 1999 there were bilingual programs in Chinese, Cambodian, Russian, and Spanish at 20 schools, serving 3,000 students. It still has a Russian math program http://webgui.phila.k12.pa.us/schools/l/loesche/about-us
- BTW http://www.myartsrising.org/artszones/entry/cca-baldi-middle-school says the area around CCA Baldi has Russians, Ukranians, and those from the former USSR
The importance of this info is that we can determine which languages would be the highest priority for certain subjects (say Chinese for South Philly High - zh:南费城高中 or Cambodian for McBride - not written yet) so we can ask for non-English versions of these articles.
