Skater list
[edit]We could make a list of skaters she's worked with, with the seasons/time period next to each. @Henni147 Editor120918756 (talk) 13:57, 27 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Editor120918756: Yes, if we find reliable sources for all, we can do that. Ito's own books should be a good start (I have access to their content). A list like that already exists on Ito's Japanese article that we can transfer and expand here with more skaters. I try to complete the two sections about her career and works now and add a corpus of the list in one visit. Henni147 (talk) 15:11, 27 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Henni147 You seem well-prepared 😂 Editor120918756 (talk) 17:34, 27 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Editor120918756: I actually planned to create this article some time ago, but then I had so many other things going on (Hanyu's series, articles for professional figure skating and Shinya Kiyozuka, the table templates ...) and it kind of drowned in my pile of projects :D Henni147 (talk) 17:42, 27 October 2023 (UTC)

Images that can be added
[edit]Can we take images directly from Ito's websites and interviews and link them into the wikipedia entries? These are technically official, even though we don't have permission for them. @Henni147 Editor120918756 (talk) 13:00, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Editor120918756: Unfortunately not. Wikipedia only allows the embedding of images from the Wikimedia Commons library, which means the images must be either licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license or uploaded in the public domain space. This is not the case for Ito's images.
- I genuinely think, that the current gallery with eight images is more than enough (some FAC reviews might be picky even with that). I also added a picture of Hanyu's Origin costume, which has been nominated for Best Costume at the 2020 ISU Awards and is currently displayed as a replica at Madame Tussauds in Tokyo. The section about Hanyu is currently hidden, but I hope to finish everything today. Ito's career summary got a bit longer than originally intended, but there are some interesting facts that I think are worth being mentioned. Henni147 (talk) 13:21, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Henni147 So how did you get the Madame Tussauds one? Editor120918756 (talk) 13:45, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Editor120918756: Unfortunately, we have none from Madame Tussauds as such. But thanks to fellow photographers Phantom Kabocha and David W. Carmichael, we got images of the original costume from 2019 Skate Canada and the 2019 Grand Prix Final in Turin. Especially the latter has really nice quality. - @Henni147 So how did you get the Madame Tussauds one? Editor120918756 (talk) 13:45, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
@Editor120918756: Update I have finally completed the life and career summary parts of the article. I decided to add images of Asada's The Bell costume, which was Ito's main source of inspiration as a designer, and Hanyu's purple Origin costume, which was nominated at the 2020 ISU Awards for Best Costume and is on display at Madame Tussauds in Tokyo now. I think, this is a logical selection that nicely supports the content of the sections.
I am preparing another section about Ito's style and influences as a designer, giving some interesting insights into her work. But I may need some more days for that. Then we can nominate it for the "Did you know?"-section on Wikipedia's mainpage. Since it's a brand new page, it satisfies all required criteria, so I think it's worth a go. - ... that Japanese costume designer Satomi Ito has created costumes for figure skating, artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, equestrian vaulting, ballet, and ballroom dance?
- Main source: World Figure Skating article about Satomi Ito (one of the most reliable Japanese magazines about figure skating)
- English translation: "I was worried that if I only made costumes for figure skating, I wouldn't be able to grow. The materials used for ballet costumes are completely different, so that alone was very refreshing. Other performing arts like ballroom dance or rhythmic gymnastics also have their own characteristics. [...] When I was making costumes for vaulting, a sport in which artists perform on a horseback, [...]"
- Source for artistic gymnastics: Number article about artistic gymnast Aiko Sugihara (one of Japan's leading sports magazines)
- English translation: "The costumes [for Sugihara] were created by Satomi Ito, who is in charge of [figure skater] Yuzuru Hanyu's costumes."
- Original quote: "衣装は羽生結弦のコスチュームを担当する伊藤聡美さんに制作を依頼した。"
- Note: the image above is only meant to be used for the ALT1 hook.
- ALT1: ... that a replica of Japanese designer Satomi Ito's costume for two-time Olympic figure skating champion Yuzuru Hanyu from 2019 is on display at Madame Tussauds in Tokyo?
- Source: Tokyo Sports article about Hanyu's costume at Madame Tussauds (one of Japan's main sports newspapers)
- English translation: "Satomi Ito, who designed this costume [...]"

Overall: @Henni147: Most of this looks good to me. Long enough, new enough and generally a nice-looking article: perhaps a touch on the laudatory/promotional side, but I don't see a real NPOV issue here. I prefer ALT0, which reads slightly better. However, on the first quotation, I don't see evidence that Ito created costumes for ballroom dance and rhythm gymnastics, only that she says that they also have their own characteristics. Is it made explicit elsewhere in the article? Happy to AGF the non-English source if so. UndercoverClassicist T·C 10:59, 5 November 2023 (UTC)
- @UndercoverClassicist: Thank you very much for the review! You are right about the source. Sorry, I didn't realize that Ito was not explicitely mentioned as a designer there. Here is an English source that mentions her as a designer for rhythmic gymnastics:
- Japan Forward article (affiliate of the daily newspaper Sankei Shimbun)
- Quote: "Having designed costumes for skating, rhythmic gymnastics and ballet, I questioned Ito if there were other sports she would like to design uniforms for."
- There are also two or three sources in the article for ballroom dance, but I can't remember which ones. Have to check them again. Henni147 (talk) 16:13, 5 November 2023 (UTC)
- Happy with that on those three; drop me a ping when you've got one for ballroom. UndercoverClassicist T·C 16:29, 5 November 2023 (UTC)
- @UndercoverClassicist: I just found this article here that mentions ballroom dance as well:
- Fashiontech News interview with Ito (published by ZOZO NEXT Inc., a Japanese company specialized in technical innovations for fashion; may have to check for reliability)
Quote: "今はちょうど、社交ダンスの衣装と自分のコレクションをつくり始めているところです。"
Translation: "Right now, I'm just starting to create my own collection of ballroom dance costumes."
- If this source does not meet the source requirements, I will check the other ones in the article again. I know that it was mentioned somewhere, just forgot in which one :D Henni147 (talk) 16:42, 5 November 2023 (UTC)
- In the circumstances, I'm happy to Approve: it was already very nearly established in the existing sources, so we only needed a confirmatory nudge: the subject's word for it is good enough for me in that situation. UndercoverClassicist T·C 20:13, 5 November 2023 (UTC)

@UndercoverClassicist: Excellent. Thank you very much for your review! By the way, do you have a spontaneous suggestion how to make the content/wording sound more neutral? I would try to fix that issue before the article gets mentioned in the DYK section.
Note: I remember that at the 2019 Skate Canada competition, Hanyu's costume ripped at his waist during the step sequence, which led to a level deduction, and Ito apologized for the blooper in a public interview. However, since there is so much written about him in the article already, I wasn't sure about adding this bit of info (this page shouldn't be about Hanyu after all). I can try to look up if there has been a similar issue with other costumes. I think this is an interesting addition that would balance out the 'promotional' tone a bit. Henni147 (talk) 09:32, 6 November 2023 (UTC)
- The thing that sticks out to me is the way the article is consistently focalised from Ito's perspective, with a lot of emphasis given to her thoughts/hopes/dreams and often with her as the storyteller (e.g. at the end of the "Education" section). It reads a little like an interview-feature in a magazine, where an encyclopaedia article would normally be more detached.
- A few individual phrases that stick out:
- a collaboration that would turn into the most successful of Ito's career
- Ito eventually fulfilled her dream of collaborating with Mao Asada
Also, one ref error: "FS Cultural Book" doesn't appear to be cited (or might be cited incorrectly?). UndercoverClassicist T·C 10:10, 6 November 2023 (UTC)
- @UndercoverClassicist: Thank you very much for your comments! I removed two direct quotes from Ito, including the one that you mentioned from the education section, to make article sound less like an interview. I also changed the two sentences that you highlighted above as follows:
- Old: [...] from Hanyu—a collaboration that would turn into the most successful of Ito's career over the following decade
New: [...] from Hanyu. It was the longest collaboration of Ito's career in the following decade - Old: Ito eventually fulfilled her dream of collaborating with Mao Asada
New: Ito eventually got the opportunity for a collaboration with Mao Asada
- Old: [...] from Hanyu—a collaboration that would turn into the most successful of Ito's career over the following decade
- I hope, this is a good solution, but I'm always open for better ideas. Oh, and thank you very much for pointing out the missing inline citation from the FS Cultural Book! There was no error message in the preview, so I didn't notice. I added it to the article now. Henni147 (talk) 13:16, 6 November 2023 (UTC)
