Sadio is the best signing Klopp has made. Am sure if he was present against Burnley. Liverpool wouldn't have lost that match. Nuhour (talk) 14:47, 12 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Lead image edit war

[edit]

User:Fleets has changed the lead image three times, each with no edit summary other than "fixed". Per WP:3RR it is not considered good manners to make the same edit more than three times (I have now done it twice) so we must discuss.

I will give my reasons why the image I (and the IP) have chosen is best:

  1. It is a portrait. The other appears to be a crop of a larger photo
  2. Per MOS:LEADIMAGE: "Lead images should be natural and appropriate representations of the topic; they should not only illustrate the topic specifically, but also be the type of image used for similar purposes in high-quality reference works, and therefore what our readers will expect to see". In this case it is better to have a footballer in a football kit than in a suit.
  3. The image I chose was taken by a prolific taker of quality images related to Austrian football for Wikimedia. Its quality is evident.

The only possible argument for the second image is that it is more recent, but this is not a strong enough argument. Apart from the red tie, there is no blatant way of knowing this is related to Liverpool, and recent is not always the most fitting: Would you want a picture of George Best as a handsome Manchester United player in the 1960s, or looking a mess from his alcohol abuse in the 1990s and 2000s?

Harambe Walks (talk) 21:59, 15 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have left no such edit summary. There is no relevance to whether an image is cropped or not. Your desired image was no doubt cropped by the photographer. Your desired image is not in a football kit, but a train ning top and thus renders your position null and void as you would equally, or to a greater extent, expect to see the player in the suit that they turn up to in a game, and are interviewed in after a game. The proliferation of images taken has no bearing on the infobox image. That in addition to the rather one-eyed summation of the more recent image would see the outcome as per the status quo.Fleets (talk) 08:32, 16 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Once again, you are being very disingenuous here and in your edit summaries – what you actually say each time is "tidy" which is not really much different to "fixed". I agree with Harambe Walks that the original image was more appropriate. As this is now becoming a controversial edit, I suggest that the matter is taken to WP:Football for a proper discussion. 78.147.163.202 (talk) 08:49, 16 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks Harambe, but I don't believe that I was being disingenuous at all. Tidy and fixed are two different words, with very different meanings. Please walk it there if you wish.Fleets (talk) 08:52, 16 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Firstly, I am not Harambe. Secondly, perhaps you can explain how replacing one image with another, regardless of either image's merits, can be described in an edit summary with the single word "tidy"? 78.147.163.202 (talk) 08:58, 16 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I have reverted until a consensus is reached. IP please be civil and it is a very widely used edit summary, rightly or wrongly, by numerous editors.Fleets (talk) 09:04, 16 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

My apologies to User:Fleets, my short term memory is sketchy at best and if you are hurt by my misquote I do apologise. I just remembered it was one short word related to a minor edit of the article. Though "fixed" and "tidy" are not extremely different, I know how frustrating it is to be misquoted. Sorry Harambe Walks (talk) 21:52, 16 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I can also confirm categorically I am not IP 78xx, I have never visited Sussex in my life. Harambe Walks (talk) 21:54, 16 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Not hurt, no worries and apology accepted. I reciprocate and apologise to you, but it felt like you accidentally logged out to continue a conversation, as the IP jumped in immediately with the same argument, similar language, tone, etc. I do in no way accuse you of sock-puppetry or other such things, but would encourage you to visit Sussex, and without sounding like the travel board, it is a lovely place.Fleets (talk) 08:47, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Winger or Wide Forward - Which would be more suitable?

[edit]

Hello. Just here to discuss whether "winger" would be an accurate term for him. It is, after all, a traditional term. Would be amiss if we didn't consider this and continue labelling any player who plays wide as "winger" without considering his playing style and his role in the team.

To that end, would like to appeal that instead of winger, the term "wide forward" be used. Now I understand that these two terms may not really sound that different, but the roles involved need to be considered. Mane is not just a player who sticks to the byline. He does not simply try to beat the opposition fullback and whip in crosses. That's what a traditional winger is considered to be. No, Liverpool do not have traditional wingers. Mane and Salah both drift in, allowing their fullbacks to make the forward runs. And he does not simply look to cross the ball, rather tries and play through the middle more often than not. While his starting position is out wide, his role definitely is not consistent with the ones that we associate with a winger. A wide forward is a much more accurate term for him.

Happy to discuss this further. Vinyl Guy (talk) 07:12, 6 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

"Wide forward" isn't even a real term, so let's stick to winger, which our readers will actually identify. Mattythewhite (talk) 13:37, 6 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hello. Sorry, but your premise is wrong; the term is real. You just might not have read it. Wide forwards are all that exist in today's game. Most football enthusiasts are aware of it. A few may not be acquainted with it, but does not mean they shouldn't be. This platform's sole purpose is to do just that. Winger is a traditional term with limited roles. And you'd hardly find any nowadays. Sadio certainly isn't one.
The following links would be of help here-
https://bleacherreport.com/articles/1061897-top-15-inside-forwards-in-european-football#slide0
https://www.fourfourtwo.com/features/13-best-forwards-world (you won't find the term winger here at all)
https://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2010/mar/24/the-question-inside-out-wingers
Point I'm trying to make is that football's evolved. The terms we were used to, they have too. It becomes the editor's responsibility, then, to ensure that accurate terms are used, for educating the readers. Cannot dismiss this without a discussion. Cheers. Vinyl Guy (talk) 18:17, 6 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Just call him by the term that is both more descriptive than yours and more widely known: he is an inverted winger. It really is that simple, which describes his tendencies to cut in much better than whatever "wide forward" means. Alexmunger (talk) 21:31, 9 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

National caps

[edit]

In fact, Mané played 58 games and scored 17 goals in official competitions or games. Then, he played 4 games for one goal in unofficial games. See the stats at National-Football-Teams https://www.national-football-teams.com/player/47674/Sadio_Mane.html It's a good site! 62 games for 18 aren't the true stats. --Joan Benvegnu (talk) 00:53, 3 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Style of Play

[edit]

Could you please add a section regarding his playing style? He is considered one of the best players in the world and fans want to know what characteristics make him that way.

Is this okay?

Mane is widely renowned for his speed, finishing, positioning, and has often been considered one of the fastest players in the Premier League. [1] His excellent sense of composure and concentration allow his positioning skills to excel and receive crosses to finish plays. Though his shots on goal are not considered the most powerful, he was significantly improved his accuracy and finishing from mainly inside the box. Occasionally, he has been praised for his heading accuracy, despite his short stature. Thecowisop (talk) 03:45, 7 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Not done. What you propose adding isn't well-supported by the source and runs afoul of things like WP:WEASEL; I'm also unsure of the reliability of the source anyway. –Deacon Vorbis (carbon • videos) 16:01, 7 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Style of Play section needed

[edit]

We need a Style of Play section for Sadio Mane. He has been one of the best players in world football for a couple of seasons now. All good players have a Style of Play section. So Sadio Mane should have one too in my opinion Ishraq Syed (talk) 05:47, 1 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Here is my piece on the same : Sadio Mane is a fast hard working footballer with immense stamina who is known for his goal scoring as well as helping the team out in defense. He can play anywhere across the front line but is primarily deployed as a Winger. He epitomizes Jurgen klopp's gegenpressing style of play. Mane finished 4th in Ballon d'or 2019 behind Lionel Messi, Virgil Van dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo on which Lionel Messi himself stated that it was a shame that Mane finished fourth meaning that he should have finished higher up. Lionel Messi also had voted for Mane in FIFA the best awards. Ishraq Syed (talk) 05:59, 1 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You're right, I will try to add something. Ae245 (talk) 10:31, 1 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

"One of the best players in the world"

[edit]

The sentence "He is widely considered as one of the best players in the world" keeps being put as the second sentence in the lead, backed by a couple of not great sources [1] [2]. I really don't think that this is good enough, such a bold and potentially POV claim needs some pretty robust sourcing. It seems to me that this is mostly based on coming fourth in the most recent Ballon D'Or list, which is already noted further down in the list. Just stick to the facts. Ilikeeatingwaffles (talk) 09:24, 4 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Philanthropy

[edit]

Is Mané's philanthropy (building a local hospital and school) notable?

Given his strong record of philanthropy, why doesn’t the lede paragraph note that, in addition to his athletic bio? Such is certainly the case in articles involving other persons who are primarily notable for their occupation but also are very philanthropic! Irish Melkite (talk) 23:57, 21 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Mane's Father

[edit]

The article states that Mane's father died when he was 7 but there are conflictiong sources for this. His father allegedly appears in this video by BBC News Africa from 2019 https://twitter.com/bbcafrica/status/1515350800763133960?s=21&t=dLr5VY2yd0xh2VRv-45uiQ. I believe this source is trustworthy so what should the action be? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jayyemi (talkcontribs) 23:34, 16 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The Liverpool report also gives out the same information as the Twitter post. You'd think this information would be right including the text "his father, El Hadji Talibo Mane, spends his time praying at the local mosque.", though perhaps this might have been before the father passed away. I'm inclined to think parts of the video was recorded before he became a professional footballer. If source 11 appears to be wrong, that part of the article might have to be tweaked a bit later.
