Nomenclature explained
[edit]"Son My" is the modern name of this village, the name that is always used in Vietnam itself. My Lai and the other hamlets have been consolidated into communes. So the hamlet names are no longer used, at least not in the sense of being specific locations. The massacre was not limited to My Lai, and extended to other hamlets of Son My village. Readers looking for My Lai the hamlet probably expect to find information about the actual locations where the massacre took place, as well as the modern monument, so they would not be served by an article that covered only the area within the former hamlet boundaries. The My Lai Massacre/Son My setup corresponds to that used for other notorious locations such as No Gun Ri Massacre/Nogeun-ri, and Auschwitz concentration camp/Oświęcim.
