Some historical facts about the Russia Tower project
[edit]Elk Salmon- I'm not sure what your sources of information are, but I think some of them are incorrect.
The developer of the Russia Tower project was Olympia & York, which was one of North America's largest real estate developers before it went bankrupt in 1992. Olympia & York hired SOM in 1992 and the initial design for the Russia Tower was produced in 1992, not in 1995. SOM's original design called for a 134-story building, not 116 as you say. Two hand-made renderings of the tower have been prepared. You can see them here:
The Council on Tall Buildings and Habitat [2] created in partnership with Emporis an official database of tall buildings where you can find all of the characteristics of the SOM design:
The Olympia & York bankruptcy was one of the main reasons why the project has been canceled. Another reason being that the Moscow government couldn't find, untill recently, any other developer who would be willing to commit development resources to a project of this magnitude.
It is true that the architect of record was Mr. Boris Thor, however the building's faceted shape with diamond braces was the idea of SOM's chief designer and was based on the Shukhov Tower, which he saw during his first trip to Moscow.
Also, who is really interested in those plot numbers between which the proposed building was moved so many times? Why not provide an overview of the architectural design instead? Some pictures of both SOM's and Foster's design would help.
Also it would be nice to know what caused the government to change the initial design and the name of the project.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.3.55.84 (talk) 20:57, 9 May 2006
- First of all - sign please. 2. CITY company has been founded in 1992 and in first project provided construction of small 12-24 storeys buildings. If you have source for O&Y show it then please. On my memory Russia Tower appeared in IBC in conception of Boris Thor and ZRPA, that was unveiled in 1994. Russia Tower was shown on plot 3 but it was quickly moved to plot 14, because of 45 storeys tall Embankment Place complex proposed to be build together with Bagration bridge. Skyscrapers from Thor's conception [4] (scan from MIBC booklet) or here is conception of Russia Tower [5] (shown on plot 3). According to SOM site 1996 version was 125 storeys tall although most of newspapers printed number 116. Emporis and SSP info is based on this page on SOM site [6], new note on 134f version appeared short time ago (in 2003). list this page down to see note about 125f version. CTBUH does not relates to Emporis entry anyhow. Elk Salmon 07:50, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
- Getting the information from the source... Gil Gorski[7], who did the renderings and I belive is still alive, or someone at SOM should be able to clear the issue of when the first design for Russia tower was presented to the public. The renderings could have not appeared without the design...75.3.9.40 19:44, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

Restart of project
[edit]Is this article http://en.rian.ru/business/20100322/158275198.html refering to an actual restart of the Russia tower project. If so the article should be updated. 86.133.56.177 (talk) 17:22, 30 March 2010 (UTC) Maybe, but height will be reduced. Jerchel (talk) 17:33, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
- Are there any other sources on this supposed restart? Stormchaser89 (talk) 7:10, 25 April 2012 (US Central)
it goes from "this project has been canceled" to "this project will be completed by 2016" without any explanation; should fix this — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.112.52.33 (talk) 21:47, 9 July 2012 (UTC)
