Any updates or information on soldiers who were involved in putting the dome in place?

[edit]

Considering the deaths of workers at Chernobyl when that location was sealed, the US location must have a bigger story. What happened to the troops involved in sealing this location at Runit Island? Have the troops experienced any negative health effects? Any updates on this aspect to the story would be greatly appreciated. 1.10.193.111 (talk) 23:02, 22 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I vaguely remembers that I saw a documentary on US victims of radioactive cleanup projects and Runit Island was one of those cases. I also remember some website hosted by victims still alive with relevant information on the Runit Island clean-up complete with judicial papers, law cases and such. Would take some time to digg out, but I think the info is at your fingertips (ie. on-line and public). RhinoMind (talk) 09:41, 28 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Area was not decontaminated properly

[edit]

"...However, the soil around the dome was found to be more contaminated than its contents, so a breach could not increase the radiation levels by any means. Because the cleaning operation in the 1970s only removed an estimated 0.8 percent of the total transuranic waste in the Enewetak atoll..." This expresses clearly, that the area was not decontaminated properly by the polluter. Should this not be elaborated in the article? It is extremely sad, that this is used as an argument to not do anything anymore! Bonu (talk) 09:42, 13 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Source for additional image of dome

[edit]

This link is an image of the different parts of the dome. The image was created by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory for U.S. Department of Defense so it's public domain. It's used in this article. Since it's a public domain image, it should be uploaded to Commons. - tucoxn\talk 13:35, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The 2020 report

[edit]

Maybe it should be mentioned that the domes condition is fine for now and no repairs will done beyond regular maintenance?

https://www.energy.gov/sites/prod/files/2020/06/f76/DOE-Runit-Dome-Report-to-Congress.pdf

DOE believes that no further maintenance of the dome is required at this time beyond conducting periodic preventative maintenance of the exterior concrete and eradication of rooting vines infiltrating the voids between concrete cap segments. Results from the groundwater monitoring program will ultimately be used to make an informed decision about management of the site. In the interim, DOE will continue to provide preventative maintenance of the external concrete. 176.10.207.45 (talk) 09:12, 23 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I've gone ahead and added this to the article. Thanks! Revirvlkodlaku (talk) 19:54, 23 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Location map within the atoll needed

[edit]

@Revirvlkodlaku: you reverted my edit using {{Overlay}} to indicate the location of the island. Please provide equivalent visual information in some other more acceptable format. – Fayenatic London 21:21, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Fayenatic, I see what you're referring to. Are you able to reduce the scale of the image, so it doesn't break up the layout of the page? Revirvlkodlaku (talk) 03:23, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Revirvlkodlaku: I've reduced the size, but I don't think templated images can be displayed within a gallery code. – Fayenatic London 20:59, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Fayenatic, I think that's a good compromise. Thanks! Revirvlkodlaku (talk) 03:22, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
