Otto's death

[edit]

Are there any verifiable sources for statement, that Otto died of malaria? Encyclopedia Of Religion (Second Edition) states: "In October 1936 Otto fell some twenty meters from a tower, a fall that persistent but unconfirmed rumors identify as a suicide attempt. Whatever the cause, he suffered severely from his injuries and died of pneumonia on March 6, 1937." (p. 6926) mz 08:21, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Since the existing entry appears to be a surmise, feel free to use your source, but be sure to cite title, publisher & publication date at a minimum, and ISBN if it has one. It is hard to believe that a 20 meter fall wouldn't have killed him outright. --Blainster 22:55, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Other translations

[edit]

I deleted the reference to other translation(s), since there obviously are too many of them and they should be all referred to on their respective language versions of Wikipedia. mz 15:17, 23 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject class rating

[edit]

This article was automatically assessed because at least one WikiProject had rated the article as start, and the rating on other projects was brought up to start class. BetacommandBot 04:26, 10 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unqualified Statement

[edit]

This should probably be removed: "Eliade used the concepts from The Idea of the Holy as the starting point for his own 1957 book, The Sacred and the Profane." Eliade's notion of the sacred and the profane was directly stolen from Durkheim. Otto barely discusses the profane in The Holy.

He may also have been influenced by Durkheim, but there is a source for him being influenced by Otto, and I will soon add a second one. Gazelle55 (talk) 01:20, 12 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Reference to Carl Gustav Jung needed

[edit]

The list of people influenced by Otto does not mention Carl Gustav Jung. It should do, as his "Psychology and Religion" (1937) certainly showed the influence of Rudolf Otto. ACEOREVIVED (talk) 21:16, 22 March 2012 (UTC) OK, I see there is a reference to Carl Gustav Jung in the article now, thank you. Vorbee (talk) 17:10, 21 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Acknowledgement of copied material

[edit]

As per Wikipedia policy, I should acknowledge I copied material from the page numinous to this page. It was the sentence and quote about Aldous Huxley. I forgot to mention in the edit summary. Gazelle55 (talk) 00:30, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Addition to German titles

[edit]

I believe there were other books by Otto that are not listed in the list of German titles of his books at the end of this article. I have found a website referring to Zur Erneuerung und Ausgestaltung des Gottesdienstes. My - admittedly very limited - knowledge of German would translate this as "On the Restoration and Wholeness of the Servants of God". I think this title should go in the article. The website where I read of this book is https://www.thriftbooks.com/a/rudolf-otto. There were some other German titles not listed in the article, too. It includes Gottheit und Gottheiter Der Arier and Verbesserung Und Verarrbeitungseigens. The thriftbooks website did list Zue Erneuerung und Ausgestaltung des Gottestienstes as "Out of stock", which I take to mean it is now out of print. YTKJ (talk) 21:39, 8 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
