Finding sources

[edit]

It is not so easy to find sources the lists for some years. I just found this for 2015 and realised there were a lot that year https://royalsociety.org/news/2015/03/wolfson-research-merit-awards-march/ then this in the same year with some overlap https://royalsociety.org/news/2015/07/wolfson-research-merit-awards-july/ Then I found also https://royalsociety.org/news/2014/wolfson-merit-awards-may/ A few more using the site's search facility https://royalsociety.org/search/?query=Wolfson%20Research%20Merit%20Awa but they seem not to have a consistent way of announcing them! Nature of award

[edit]

This is a research grant award to support faculty salary, not a prize or medal or research achievement award. Not to be confused. Fellow007 (talk) 16:45, 6 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It is hard to say from the sources on the RS website. It seems to be at least partly due to the track record, hence the name. My understanding is it is aimed at retention of key researchers BUT application is for a specific plan of future work. Billlion (talk) 12:06, 23 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Just to add it does not fund specific research work, just a salary boost. But the application includes a research plan, which is is assumed will be funded from other sources. Holders submit an annual report so this is an element of checking they have done something. Also the name Research Merit Award, is clearly meant to indicate that it is an "award" for "research merit". So it is a strange animal, a cross between a gong and a grant. Also I think the scheme has changed again now. I was going on the 2015-2020 version. Billlion (talk) 16:44, 9 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Renamed

[edit]

I noticed the page had been renamed, but the intro was wrong as it had old and new names reversed! There are no references to anything about the new scheme, so it seems the renaming was premature! Billlion (talk) 16:56, 9 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I moved the article (back?) to Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award as that was what the article is a bout. The new scheme with a similar name is a Fellowship but the article has little to say about this new scheme and it is not clear if it is notable, as no one has found any reliable independent sources.Billlion (talk) 07:19, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
