clue

[edit]

In the intro section, Bacon's use of the words "clue" and "labyrinth" (not quoted but mentioned in paraphrase) would evoke the tale of Theseus and the Minotaur in the mind of any contemporary reader. Since this is important to understanding Bacon's meaning, I have added an explanatory footnote, with source (Wall 2012) and quotation. That quotation in turn quotes Bacon's text, including "labyrinth" and "clue", and notes "Bacon makes the allusion as explicit as it can be".
