Should this page really be Circus Maximus? Is that not the specific name for the circus in Rome?

Source problems

[edit]

Besides the general dearth of sources in the article, a source is needed to cover details of topography and named structures. Mihailiuk's on-line, linked article addresses the vexed question of Rome's porta triumphalis - but this is not dealt with in the Roman triumph article with respect to determining the porta s location or any distinguishing features, or Roman circuses in general). Mihailiuk doesn't even mention Merida's circus. So on what grounds, or rather, on whose scholarship and authority does our article identify these features? Just to reiterate what I wrote, many years ago now, regarding Rome's porta triumphalis in the Roman triumph article, with Mary Beard (The Roman Triumph) as source:

"The location and nature of the Porta Triumphalis are among the most uncertain and disputed aspects of the triumphal route; some sources imply a gate exclusively dedicated to official processions, others a free-standing arch, or the Porta Carmentalis by another name, or any convenient gate in the vicinity."
