Roman Catholic Diocese of Smolensk → Diocese of Smolensk (Roman Catholic) – To distinguish it from similarly named entities in the Russian Orthodox Church and the Ruthenian Uniate Church. Laurel Lodged (talk) 11:40, 1 February 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose. Standard wording and already disambiguated by the addition of the name of the church. No idea therefore what the nominator means by disambiguation being needed. See Category:Roman Catholic dioceses and prelatures established in the 17th century and Category:Roman Catholic dioceses in Poland. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:28, 1 February 2023 (UTC)
- Reply @Necrothesp: "standard"? What standard? There are multiple entities with near-equivalent names; they need to be disambiguated. The only question is, "Which is the correct type of disambiguator?". For geography, it is the comma; for type it is parentheses. Laurel Lodged (talk) 11:53, 2 February 2023 (UTC)
- The standard, as is quite clear, is "Roman Catholic Diocese of Blah". I'm really not sure why you think that needs changing. -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:12, 2 February 2023 (UTC)
- @Necrothesp: That's convenient when there is only one entity of that name. The RC "standard" breaks down when there are two entities. For example Diocese of Clogher (Church of Ireland) and Roman Catholic Diocese of Clogher. It seems clear in this case that to maintain consistency between the two entities, that the RC name should also change to "Diocese of Clogher (Roman Catholic Church)". - I'm afraid I'm utterly confused. Which is the other Roman Catholic Diocese of Smolensk that may be confused with this one? The current title is clear WP:NATURALDISAMBIGUATION and clear standard disambiguation throughout Wikipedia. -- Necrothesp (talk) 08:25, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
- @Necrothesp: The other one is the Ruthenian Catholic Archeparchy of Smolensk, which is also part of the Roman Catholic Church. Still, I think the proposed move is a bad idea. If better disambiguation is needed, then it would be better to move this article to "Latin Catholic Diocese of Smolensk". Vanjagenije (talk) 15:40, 4 February 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose based on @Necrothesp's comments.
- @Vanjagenije The Ruthenian Catholic Archeparchy of Smolensk was an Eastern Catholic diocese, but not a Roman Catholic (ie Latin Catholic) diocese. It was part of the Catholic Church as a member of the Eastern Catholic sui juris Ruthenian Uniate Church. Roman Catholic dioceses are almost always specifically Latin rite.
