Should there be some mention of Goodell's references in popular culture? I'm thinking specifically South Park.ErieSwiftByrd (talk) 19:00, 10 December 2017 (UTC)

No. Keep "popular culture" sections out of biographical articles. They're cancerous. Lizard (talk) 20:34, 10 December 2017 (UTC)

Is he currently Commissioner??

They say he is the new commissioner, yet I hear he won't take over until Tagliabue retires and in a NFL Network Press Release will happen before the Regular Season starts.--Jerluvsthecubs 23:27, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

I just changed the phrasing and added a link to this story on CBC.ca that says he expects to begin work before the beginning of the regular season. I'd have been surprised if he was hired effective immediately. -- Plutor 11:28, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
He is in the news today as the NFL Commissioner. -- Charles Edwin Shipp (talk) 17:06, 29 August 2014 (UTC)

Election

The section dealing with his election as commissioner contradicts the lead paragraph. The section suggests the final vote was 23-8, while the lead says unanimous. The sources support the lead, with SI.com saying 32-0, meaning the Raiders did not abstain as the section claims. I couldn't find any support for the vote totals for the first 4 rounds of voting in the sources; anyone know where that information came from? -- Jonel | Speak 21:08, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

Washington Post columnist Mark Maske supports the account contrary to the lead in this post: http://blog.washingtonpost.com/nflinsider/2006/08/commissioner_vote_was_close.html.
Great, thanks! -- Jonel | Speak 05:09, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Age Discrepancy

His birth year is given as 1959 yet his high school graduation year is given as 1971. Not possible 24.211.5.191 04:16, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

It says his family relocated in 1971. And graduated from college in 1981. Which does add up to a 1977 high school graduation date. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.104.62.3 (talk) 21:18, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

NFL outside of the US

I made the change to the quote from the article cited as the original wording in the wikipedia article was far to optimistic given what the actual article stated. Smith03 01:31, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

Mention on "Countdown with Keith Olbermann," 16 October 2009

This edit [1] was the subject on tonight's (16 Oct. 2009) Keith Olbermann programme. Mr. Olbermann, however, described the edit as the work of a "hacker in need of a spell-check," or something along those lines. Torkmann (talk) 01:28, 16 October 2009 (UTC)

Heh, wish I could have seen that. However, just to head off any potential edits by others, this isn't something that needs to be mentioned in this article :) Huntster (t @ c) 01:37, 16 October 2009 (UTC)

I think one of his brothers is currently an elected official. A NY State Assembly Member. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.104.62.3 (talk) 21:24, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

Roger Goodell was a co-captain along with Allan Schnoor of the Basketball and Baseball teams at Bronxville High School. 99.23.160.242 (talk) 01:33, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

Basic cleanup

I'm working on doing some basic cleanup and scrubbing of this article. Does anyone have any suggestions? --TravisBernard (talk) 16:45, 20 January 2012 (UTC)

The comment in the first section, that Goodell got his first job through a letter-writing campaign, doesn't have any support (the TV Guide link cited doesn't mention it). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.226.153.28 (talk) 13:58, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

Yes. Why is an entry for the Commissioner of a professional sport listing his political party? Weird. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.34.135.230 (talk) 06:12, 19 February 2017 (UTC)

Failed to protect players due to petty, minimalist greed

Allows non professional referees to regulate games in lieu of trained profeesionals, leading to a degradation of the competetive nature of the NFL, injury to players, and overall disillusionment of fans over a minute amount of money in spite of the leagues record profits. http://deadspin.com/5945638/nflpa-executive-committee-absolutely-kills-nfl-owners-and-roger-goodell-for-locking-out-officials — Preceding unsigned comment added by Clewttu (talkcontribs) 23:36, 23 September 2012 (UTC)

I think there should be some "criticism" section, which is especially relevant at this point in the season!70.171.10.13 (talk) 04:03, 24 September 2012 (UTC)

Most of his actions to "protect the shield" from Spygate, Bountygate, and the player conduct suspensions have already been met with criticism, so any content regarding criticism is already mixed into the article. I will however divide these issues into subsections, and add a new subsection regarding the referee lockout. Cheers. Zzyzx11 (talk) 05:18, 24 September 2012 (UTC)

Why not add a section on Brett Favre and how Goodell chose to look the other way and do nothing until Favre decided to retire? Had a "normal" investigation been conducted about Penisgate, Favre would have been suspended for his contribution to the Jenn Sterger scandal. Instead, the red-headed knob chose to do nothing and simply sat on the investigation and do nothing until Favre retired. Preferential treatment is not good in the quest to "protect the shield."

New NEWS today, for future editing

NFL Commissioner Goodell makes a weighty decision

Headline-1: NFL announces domestic violence policy in wake of Rice controversy

QUOTE: " The commissioner told teams to distribute his memo to all players and to post it in locker rooms." -- Charles Edwin Shipp (talk) 19:15, 29 August 2014 (UTC) -- PS: FYI for future editing.

Semi-protected edit request on 20 September 2014

Under "Ray Rice domestic violence incident", the last sentence of the first paragraph reads: "Multiple reporters also wrote that Goodell viewed a surveillance video taken from inside the elevator that showed the actual altercation.[47]" it should read: "Multiple reporters also wrote that the NFL viewed a surveillance video taken from inside the elevator that showed the actual altercation.[47]"

i.e. replace "Goodell" with "the NFL" in that sentence. The referenced source does not mention Goodell by name at all, but does say that "the NFL viewed" and "the NFL had access"; therefore it is inaccurate to use Goodell's name here. Edheitz (talk) 00:02, 21 September 2014 (UTC)

Good catch. Changed to "the NFL had access to". Huntster (t @ c) 03:40, 21 September 2014 (UTC)

NFL commissioner selection

Goodell's selection as Commissioner following the retirement of Paul Tagliabue came as no surprise, but it was not a fait accompli. Tagliabue initiated a substantive, wide-ranging search for his successor, appointing a committee headed by owner Dan Rooney of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Please make Paul Tagliabue a hyperlink.... should point to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Tagliabue Soulcages01 (talk) 12:51, 27 March 2015 (UTC)

Done the name has been linked.-- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 12:59, 27 March 2015 (UTC)
and then undone. per WP:OVERLINK we only link the first time the name is used in the body, and Tagliabue is linked in the previous section as well as in the lead itself. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 13:02, 27 March 2015 (UTC)

NFL commissioner selection

NFL commissioner selection:

Please change to correct grammar from: Tagliabue's retirement Goodell was one of the candidates in contention for the role. To: Upon Tagliabue's retirement, Goodell was one of the candidates in contention for the role.

Done and (hopefully) improved the grammar of the following paragraph - Arjayay (talk) 19:10, 12 May 2015 (UTC)

Hello, my name is Henry McKenna, and I'm a sports journalist looking to write a story on this English Wikipedia article for Roger Goodell. I was hoping to speak with the editors on this page to hear why a "Deflategate" section has yet to get published. Please contact me at henry.mckenna@boston.com. Thank you! I've also noticed, maybe because the article was semi-protected since 2010, that there have only been 100 edits to the Goodell article since December 2012. That's pretty low, given his high profile and his involvement with many player-related issues. I've removed the semi-protection to this article for now, in case it helps spur more editing. -- Fuzheado | Talk 16:53, 2 March 2016 (UTC)
