Section headings

[edit]

User:GiantSnowman — This article has only four sentences, yet is is broken into three paragraphs, each of which is its own section. Three section headings seems like a lot for a four sentence article. This violates the guidance at MOS:BODY ("Very short or very long sections and subsections in an article look cluttered and inhibit the flow of the prose.") and at MOS:PARAGRAPHS ("Short paragraphs and single sentences generally do not warrant their own subheading") Given how short this article, either one section heading or perhaps no section headings are warranted. I think it's fine as it is/was, but a more sensible approach would be to do what I have just done - not to move one paragraph to the introduction. Why? WP:UNDUE. GiantSnowman 07:37, 24 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

User:GiantSnowman — Your modest change is a small step in the right direction. But the fundamental problem I raised initially remains: we have a four-sentence article that is divided into three paragraphs, each of which is its own section. That violates MOS:BODY and MOS:PARAGRAPHS, and it's poor writing. Your comment re WP:UNDUE is puzzling, given that the vast majority of articles about footballers who have played for their national team mention that fact in the first paragraph. And in response to your comment/question why I moved a "paragraph" to the introduction — most good editors who see a one-sentence paragraph saying that Aguirre is an Argentine footballer and another one-sentence paragraph saying that Aguirre has played football for Argentina would agree that combining them into one paragraph is sensible. Given that this is standard layout for footballer articles, if you have a problem I suggest you raise it at WT:FOOTY. GiantSnowman 06:51, 28 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

User:GiantSnowman — I don't think you've refuted or even responded to any points I made in my previous post. If you are not interested in discussing further, but remain committed to revert any edit I make to the article, I may take this to another forum. If, however, you are interested in discussing further, my response is that I'm not aware of any rule at WP:FOOTY that says that player bios, no matter how short or how long, must consist of three sections. If you are aware of such a rule, please point it out to me so that I may consider it. The lengthy Leo Messi article, which has Good article status, is divided into many more subsections. But the Silvana Burtini article, which is only three sentences, is one single paragraph. (Even if WP:FOOTY did have the three section requirement that you appear to be claiming, I don't see how that WP:LOCALCONSENSUS would override MOS:BODY and MOS:PARAGRAPHS). Standard layout for footballer articles - Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/Players. A stub with two relevant paragraphs is more than fine. GiantSnowman 06:51, 29 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

User:GiantSnowman — You haven't responded to any arguments I raised in my last two posts. Would you do me the courtesy of explaining your interpretation of MOS:BODY and MOS:PARAGRAPHS, and how in your view they do or don't apply to this article? Regarding Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/Players, I think you've proved they very point I'm making — the suggested layout has six substantive section headings, whereas this article has two. And your edit here to the article moved it further away from the format by removing two section headings that appear in the suggested layout. You can't have it both ways — i.e., you can't stray from the suggested layout when it suits you and then revert others citing a slavish adherence to the suggested layout. The FOOTY guide has separate sections for club and international career - as we do here. MOSYBODY opens with "This style guide only lightly gives recommendations of how the body of an article should be ordered, because the diversity of presentation in various Wikipedia subjects is too great to do more in general summary form" and MOSPARAGRAPH does not prohibit an article with two short sections.
