The Name

[edit]

The name is pretty obviously cognate with Thames and probably does have to do with darkness. I'd be happier if someone with knowledge of Celtic languages could attest that there is something like it in, say, Welsh. Sanskrit tamas is used in Buddhist and Hindu (and probably Jain) philosophy to signify the darkness of ignorance. So there is some chance the name is pre-Celtic. River Tame Improvement Works (flood prevention) in 2010

[edit]

There are some useful stats in the attachment on http://www.birminghamprepared.gov.uk/news/river-tame-improvement-works/ which someone might want to extract, as I don't currently have time. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 12:26, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that. I've summarised. Sjwells53 (talk) 16:33, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wadden or Waddens?

[edit]
Resolved

"Wadden Brook" or "Waddens Brook"? Both are used in the article. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 18:17, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It's "Waddens" on the current OS maps and was also on the 1899-1905. I think SMURF may have cut the s on some occasion but the version with seems the norm. There's also Waddens Brook Lane, so-named on the local signs, as well as the maps. I'll amend.Sjwells53 (talk) 13:42, 13 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

River Bourne

[edit]

The River Bourne, River Bourne, Warwickshire, needs to be listed in the infobox under tributaries. Is it a left or right tributary? --Bejnar (talk) 17:56, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reminder, I did try to untangle the River and the Bourn/e Brooks but ended up with a headache and a dab page. I have added them to the Geobox, and the list of tributaries. Jokulhlaup (talk) 17:10, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
