Is this any more than a synonym for Quoits? JohnCD (talk) 22:21, 11 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've never heard of Quoits, so there may be a terminology difference. Also, ring tosses usually use solid rings. But I defer to other input and consultation with reliable sources as far as whether these should be merged or are sufficiently distinct. After reading Quoits, I would say keeping them separate makes sense, but I haven't looked into it much. ChildofMidnight (talk) 22:33, 11 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Quoits can be solid, at least according to the WP article. Pseudomonas(talk) 22:44, 11 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
They do seem quite similar. I'm just not sure. What would Brits say if Quoits redirected to ring toss? The rules and such for quoits seem fairly specific, while the ring toss is a bit broader. But I can see the argument for a merger. I assume ring toss would be mentioned in bold as an alternate name for the game then? Perhaps a merge proposal should be put up on that page in case anyone has an objection or an argument on why they need to be differentiated? There is lots of content to add here. A psychological stufy of encouragement, criticism, or no feedback on players [1]. It's use as a carnival game. It's history (Indian tribes played various ring games) [2]. There are also variations like magic hoops that could be included here [3]. Are the rules the same [4]? Etc. ChildofMidnight (talk) 23:14, 11 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think quoits is one of those things that has a general meaning and a specific one, like Lute. The OED entry for quoit (n.) implies that in its general sense it refers to all manner of competitive flinging-of-discs-or-rings. Thus Ring toss is a special case of quoits, but not all variations of quoits (esp the earlier senses where it's used for something discus-like) are also ring toss. Since the article's there already, I'd favour redirecting Ring toss to Quoits, at least until there's enough material to split Ring toss off as a special case :) Pseudomonas(talk) 23:23, 11 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This just seems to be a variation of Ring toss. 5hin3 (talk) 01:03, 10 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
