I think coastal-trading Mons were influenced by the French and other Europeans and imported ethnic identification. Before that, ethnic differences, while existed, did not play a huge role in people's identities. The same can be said about many Burmans in places like Yangon today. I think an intimate exposure to colonial rule led to this: "You are a Burman. Do this. You are a Burman. You can't join the military. etc." In places like Dawei, people don't call themselves "Burman"; they just don't have an ethnic identity. They are Buddhist. They speak Burmese.
