Girling (Lucas) developments labs and test track
[edit]I don't have any reliable sources so I'm not putting anything in the article proper, but for information of anyone developing this article further I worked at this site from approx Sept 1974 to approx April 1977 when it was (and had been for some years) owned by Girling, part of the Joseph Lucas group. There was a 2-storey block on the site housing offices, laboratories and motor workshops, and the former runways were used as a vehicle test track. As I recall there was an oval-shaped track around the site and a central straight track, the middle 100metre or so long section of which was covered in an epoxy compound which could be sprayed with water from the sides of the track to make a slippery "low-mu" surface for testing brakes in ice/snow-like conditions. The main purpose of the facility at the time was developing the company's anti-skid braking products for cars, commercial vehicles and railway wagons.
