Battle of Tauris claim
[edit]@TableSalt43: Hi, I saw you added the claim that Vatinius defeated Octavius at the Battle of Tauris. I marked it with Template:Citation needed span. Do you have a source showing he did this and was in command etc? Ifly6 (talk) 17:34, 8 April 2022 (UTC)
- Hello yes I do, I recently made a wikipedia article about the battle in question. Below are the sources I used.
- Sources-
- Julius Caesar, Commentarii de Bello Civili 2.40
- Cassius Dio's Roman History
- Goldsworthy, Adrian (2006). "XXI". Caesar: Life of a Colossus. New Haven: Yale Press. p. 466.
- Garo, Shahan (2019). The Remnants of Caesar’s Civil War: Naval Battle off Tauris Island. tldrhistory.com
- Damon, Cynthia (2016). Caesar. Civil War. Loeb Classical Library 39. Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press TableSalt43 (talk) 19:45, 8 April 2022 (UTC)
- I'm unconvinced that Tldrhistory.com is a reliable source; I don't think that other Wikipedia articles are accepted as reliable either. I also don't think we ought to rely on the primary sources (or translations thereof) alone.
- Looking through Goldsworthy, Caesar (2006), "Tauris" appears nowhere in the index. Nor does a search for that keyword in my PDF yield anything. Page 466 in the book relates to the aftermath of the Battle of Thapsus, not the Battle of Tauris. Nor does he mention "Vatinius" in relation to any battle of Tauris. Roman tribe Vatinia?
[edit]@StarTrekker: I saw you added in this edit something asserting that the Roman tribe "Vatinia" was named for this Publius Vatinius. I'm confused as to how this could be true. There is no Roman tribe by that name. Moreover, the thirty-five tribes were all created over a century before Publius Vatinius (cos 47 BC) was born. Ifly6 (talk) 16:35, 1 February 2023 (UTC)
- A similar disconnect seems to occur for a similar edit to Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa. Ifly6 (talk) 16:37, 1 February 2023 (UTC)
- @Ifly6: New local tribes were created during the Imperial period, I guess one could argue that these do not count as "Roman tribes" in the traditional sense despite holding Roman citizens. 1.★Trekker (talk) 13:38, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
