Forest Parks and Conservation Areas

I'm not an expert on these things, but should Forest Parks really be referred to as Conservation Areas?

My understanding has been that Forest Park is usually an historic name obtained because a park emerged from the Forestry Service that was absorbed by DoC in 1987, but that Forest Parks are more or less equivalent to Conservation Areas, and newly created areas of this status are usually referred to as Conservation Areas. Non conservation reserves

I can't find any article mentioning local reserves, which can be created for, "utility, road, street, access way, esplanade, service lane, playcentre, kindergarten, plunket room, or other like purpose"

They are protected areas, though not for conservation, so would it be appropriate to add a heading here, or should there be a new article? Johnragla (talk) 19:43, 8 January 2019 (UTC)

It still fits the page title (and some of the introduction). I would include it here for completeness. If it becomes unwieldy or looks out of place make a page and leave a link on this one. Coverage of types of protected area under Reserves Act 1977

At present, this article does not do a good job of covering protected areas from the perspective of the categories in the Reserves Act 1977. For instance:

• Historic reserves (s.18 of the Reserves Act). Not covered at present. LINZ data indicates there are 250 Historic Reserves , including places such as Queen Mary Hospital (Hanmer Springs) and Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge
• Scenic reserves (s.19 of the Reserves Act) this type is given a heading and three sentences. LINZ data indicates 970 of these. One example is Otari-Wilton's Bush
• Nature reserves (s.20 of the Reserves Act). Not covered at present. This seems a particularly significant omission, since these areas have the highest level of protection (exceeding that given to National Parks). No-one may enter other than with a permit. LINZ data indicates 62 of these. Examples include Farewell Spit. Many of the s.20 Nature reserves are islands, such as Whenua Hou and Kapiti Island
• Scientific reserves (s.21 of the Reserves Act). Not covered at present. LINZ data indicates 216 of these. Examples include Chancet Rocks, Lake Christabel, North Cape (New Zealand)
• Government purpose reserves (s.22 of the Reserves Act). Not covered at present. LINZ data indicates 359 of these. Examples include Auckland Islands marine mammal sanctuary, Clifford and Cloudy Bay Marine Mammal Sanctuary, Ōkārito Lagoon, Moutohora Island, Pukaha / Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre

I have been trying to keep to the long-standing structure of the article, and have never actually questioned it. I would support changing the structure to match the legal/accepted categories and to ensure nothing is missing. Paewiki (talk) 03:48, 7 May 2022 (UTC)

I am still planning to come up with a proposal for improving the structure. I have asked for suitable contact people in DoC, and in Forest & Bird NZ, and hope to hear back. My aim to to get a clearer view on classifications, and hopefully obtain some good publications I can cite on the topic, before setting out the plan for improvement on this page. Excessive overlap in content between the "parent" and "child" articles

At present, there is a lot of duplication between this article and the "child" articles, eg Protected_areas_of_New_Zealand#Marine_reserves and Marine reserves of New Zealand.

This does not seem to follow the guidance about "Summary style" given here WP:SUMMARY, and leads to increased and unnecessary work in maintaining the inter-related set of articles. It may be best to delete most of the detailed content in the "parent" (after checking that the "child" articles are up to date). Comments please.Marshelec (talk) 08:37, 5 May 2022 (UTC)

@Paewiki:, Hi, I see you have been actively working on these inter-connected articles. It would be helpful if you could review and comment on my suggestion here to remove the overlaps in content.
