- Not yet, as the taxonomic status doesn't seem to have been resolved in the literature. Klbrain (talk) 09:48, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
I propose the merging of Ethegotherium into Prohegetotherium given that multiple studies (like Reguero & Cerdeño 2005, Cerdeño et al. 2008, Reguero and Prevosti 2010, Cerdeño and Reguero 2015, Kramarz and Bond 2017, Reguero et al. 2021, and Hernández Del Pino et al. 2022) have considered the former to be a junior synonym of the latter, and there seems to be no study that contradicts this. --Magnatyrannus (talk | contribs) 00:52, 27 November 2022 (UTC)

- While I'm not quite an expert on South American fauna compared to Cenezoic Eurasian fauna and therefore cannot comment on whether I think "Ethegotherium" is a valid taxon, Ethegotherium's taxonomic status has not yet been resolved as it appears that only the authors Cedeño and Reguero considered it a junior synonym since they were the ones who originated this dispute while others discuss its taxonomic relationship with Prohegetotherium briefly and don't resolve it. The Hernández Del Pino et al. 2022 source indicates question marks (or "Open nomenclatures") in front of "Middle Member of the Mariño Formation" and "Lower Miocene, Santacrucian SALMA (for Ethegotherium carettei', following Reguero and Cerdeño 2005; Cerdeño et al. 2008; Cerdeño and Reguero 2015)", which indicates that the taxonomic dispute was not resolved by them regarding whether Prohegetotherium's range can be extended to the early Miocene. For those reasons, until we're sure that more sources indicate explicitly that it is a synonym, I'll have to go with a soft Oppose. PrimalMustelid (talk) 16:53, 16 March 2023 (UTC)
