Hi @Mellk, about this... Where would you draw the line between an appanage and a principality? I think it may sometimes be quite arbitrary. Many scholars speak of "appanage principalities", and many appanages sometimes become autonomous or fully independent principalities after decades or centuries. At some point the Burgundian State was arguably even more powerful than the Kingdom of France, from which it was originally created as an appanage. Some scholars also argue that in early Kievan Rus', the principalities of Pereyaslavl, Chernigov, Polotsk etc. were treated as appanages for the sons of the reigning prince of Kiev. I do understand your concern that the categorisation might get out of hand if we treat all appanages as principalities, so it is worth discussing where to draw the line. Good day. The system was different in Western Europe. You can see ru:удельное княжество for further information. Otherwise we will have to include all appanages (udels) and appanages of appanages. Mellk (talk) 18:07, 21 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
