Multiple Processor
[edit]Is the "MP" on the 9600/200MP and 9500/180MP officially[note 1] short for Multiple Processor"? Because on the Quadra 840AV, Quadra 660AV, Centris 660AV, Power Macintosh 6100 (/60AV, /66AV), Power Macintosh 7100 (/66AV, /80AV) and Power Macintosh 8100 (/80AV, /100AV), the "AV" indicates the computer has AV ports. - ^ Wikipedia only accepts official information.
- The Apple Service Source and Developer Note for the 9600 don't explicitly say "MP stands for Multiprocessor", but whenever either document mentions the technology, it always refers to them as single word "multiprocessor" which corresponds. It is what it means, even if I can't prove it to the level you're looking for because Apple deleted most of their historic website. By the way, I believe "AV" stands for "Audio/Video" not "Analog Video" (re what it says in the link you made, but not visible in the text) - there wasn't any digital video at the time. -Phipli (talk) 13:19, 11 Nov 2024 (UTC)
Case for the 8600, 9600 and Beige G3 Tower
[edit]I'm noticing that there is some confusion over cases for these machines. The confusion is because the 8600 only has 3 PCI slots, but the 9600 has 6 PCI slots. That, combined with the fact that there is a shorter version of the case used for the Beige G3, means that people have been assuming that the 8600 has the shorter case.
Before you disagree with me that the 8600 has the shorter case, please google image search for Macintosh 8600 rear ports.
The 8600 Case
This case is the full height version. The logicboard only has 3 PCI slots, and so there is a 3 slot sized gap beyond the bottom of the logic board. You can be sure that you are looking at the back of an 8600 because a) It has Built in Apple Video, b) It has built in AV ports (not on a card) c) It has 6 PCI blanking slots.
This case is from the same moulds as the 9600 case.
The 9600 Case
This case is the full height version. The logicboard only has 6 PCI slots, and so all are available for use. You can be sure that you are looking at the back of an 9600 because a) It has a knockout blanking plate where the Apple Video port would be, b) It does not have built in AV ports c) It has 6 PCI blanking slots.
This case is from the same moulds as the 8600 case.
The G3 Tower Case
This case is the "short" / "stubby" version. The logicboard only has 3 PCI slots. You can be sure that you are looking at the back of an Beige G3 tower because a) It has Built in Apple Video, b) the ports are ordered differently to the 8600 and 9600 c) It has 3 PCI blanking slots and a personality card (where the audio, video and modem ports are located, depending on the option of the card fitted).
This case is different to the 8600 and 9600 case.
I hope this clarifies. If people are in disagreement, answer here. I have all three and can share a photo of them together.
