Observations and suggestions for improvements
[edit]The following observations and suggestions for improvements were collected, following expert review of the article within the Science, Technology, Society and Wikipedia course at the Politecnico di Milano, in June 2022.
Pore structure is an elusive concept and the author of this article has gone for a quite ambitious task. The definition of pore structure can vary depending on the considered application, as porous media are found a cross a wide variety of fields. Without going into problem-specific concepts, I think the article is not complete, because is missing some important concepts that are classicaly tied to the definition of pore structure. See comments below for more details.
Detailed comments:
The author has included three categories to describe pore structure: porosity, pore size distribution and morphology. The article is missing references to topological concepts which have been linked to pore structure (see for instance the classical example of Spanne et al., 1994). Some examples include Minkowsky functionals (see e.g. Armstrong et al., 2019) or connectivity metrics. In addition, the article is not mentioning other important and widely employed parameters, such as the specific surface area, which should be certainly included.
I am not convinced that surface roughness should be included in the definition of pore structure, as this parameter is related to the texture of the pore-solid interface rather than the spatial arrangement of solids and voids.
The text is also missing some reference to models and alorithms widely employed for pore structure characterization (for instance, pore network models).
Specific notes on the text: Porosity section is very concise and not well written. The author could just reference here the existing Wikipedia entry. Porosity: “…decimal fraction between 0 and 1”. Why decimal fraction? “Porosity for the majority of rocks ranges from less than 1% to 40%.” However, in other porous media can also be larger than 40%. “A helium pyrometer was used to calculate the volume of the pores …” this part seems specific to a particular measurement. There are other ways to measure porosity. The section “The relation of pore size to pore size distribution” contains many unclear statements. As I understand it the pore size distribution can be seen as the probability density function of individual pore sizes in a sample.
