Largest tidal lake in the world
[edit]I'm always a little skeptical of these kind of claims, so I looked into it briefly and found a number of somewhat conflicting pages. About Pitt Meadows says: "North America's largest tidal lake". Pitt-Addington Marsh WMA says: "Pitt Lake is the second largest freshwater tidal lake in the world." Estuaries FactSheets (Australia) says: "Lake Macquarie, the largest tidal lake in Australia (area approximately 110 sq km)". This lake is saltwater. Also, Lake Ellesmere is a tidal lake, apparently. Its wikipedia page gives its size as 180 km², which is much larger than Pitt Lake but also a bit hard to believe. In any case I'm not sure there is a clear definition of "tidal lake", and in Lake Pitt's case it is probably important that it is a freshwater tidal lake. Even then there may be some uncertainty about what exactly counts as a "freshwater tidal lake". For example, Merrymeeting Bay in Maine is called a bay, but it is a freshwater tidal "estuary" drained by a river. It is probably smaller than Pitt Lake, but still serves to illustrate the need for definitions. Anyway, I'm just going to do my standard "one of the world's largest..." substitutions. I can't help with sources, but I've lived in the area my entire life and work for the GVRD (or Metro Vancouver as we are in the process of becoming) who manages Grant Narrows Regional Park at the southern end of the lake, and all the content is consistent with what I have heard and read elsewhere.
