Rating controversy
[edit]A controversy has arisen because Susan Polgar, who was recently elected to the USCF Executive Board, claims to be rated in the top three women in the world, but actually this is not true because Pia Cramling is the real number three rated in the world.
FIDE has a new chart of "World Top" lists.
Take a look at the chart for Susan Polgar:
http://www.fide.com/ratings/top_files.phtml?id=700088
Now, compare that with the chart for Pia Cramling:
http://www.fide.com/ratings/top_files.phtml?id=1700030
As you can plainly see, Pia Cramling has been consistently ranked as one of the top rated women in the world in every FIDE rating list since these charts have come out. Pia Cramling is currently rated number 3 in the world, and has been so on the last several lists. This is because Cramling is an active player who plays in many tournaments every year and always keeps her rating active.
On the other hand, Susan Polgar has made the top women's list in only one year: 2005, that because of two tournaments in which she played in 2004: The Oklahoma Challenge organized by Frank K. Berry and the 2004 World Chess Olympiad.
Those two tournaments are the only two FIDE rated tournaments in which Susan Polgar has played in the last 11 years since 1996.
Thus, the claim that Susan Polgar has been rated in the top three women in the world every year for the past 23 years is absolutely false. I would expect that the Swedes will protest if Chess Life publishes her claim. Sam Sloan 23:21, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
