Mis-linked

[edit]

The name in the portrait list, "Lady Castlereagh", was linked to a Wikipedia article titled "Anne Stewart, Marchioness of Londonderry" to which an earlier page titled "Lady Castlereagh" had been redirected. The "Anne Stewart..." article was mistitled -- it is about Amelia Anne Stewart, Viscountess Castlereagh, the wife of the famous British Foreign Secretary in the Regency era. She was indeed famous as Lady Castlereagh and only later styled Marchioness of Londonderry. She died long before this painter was born.

I can find no "Anne Stewart" who was the wife of a Marquess of Londonderry, so Anne Stewart looks to be a false trail.

There would be several "Lady Castlereaghs" during Laszlo's working years, since Viscount Castlereagh is the title for the heir to the Marquess of Londonderry. But it's impossible to tell which one.

Most likely, the portrait sitter was Edith Vane-Tempest-Stewart, Marchioness of Londonderry, who was Lady Castlereagh from 1899 to 1915, and was a noted Anglo-Irish society hostess. Her son, Robin_Vane-Tempest-Stewart,_8th_Marquess_of_Londonderry is listed in the Laszlo portrait list. His article mentions that Laszlo painted his portrait as a page boy in 1911. His mother would have been Lady Castlereagh at that time.

I have placed a question mark beside the name in the list, because I don't know precisely how the sitter was described in the original source for the list. I can only assume, based on reasonable speculation, that Laszlo painted a portrait of Edith Vane-Tempest-Stewart when she was Lady Castlereagh. But only the original source will confirm that. And the reference cites are inadequate. Dunnettreader (talk) 04:25, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've found her! Or at least a Laszlo sketch of her from 1913 on a livejournal website: 1913 Sketch of a Lady by de Laszlo (Christie's) which is labelled "Viscountess Castlereagh, later Marchioness of Londonderry." I assume that either the sketch or the final portrait was what was listed in the original source.
So she's Edith Helen Chapin the wife of the 7th Marquess. And the mother of the 8th Marquess whom Laszlo painted as a pageboy in 1911. I'll fix the link in the list.

Large Laszlo image deletion request

[edit]

Please see commons:Commons:Deletion requests/Post-1923 works by Philip Alexius de Laszlo where a large number (69) of images of works by Philip Alexius de Laszlo are up for deletion due to the URAA. Some of them may need to be moved to the English Wikipedia under the non-free content policy - if so please do so as soon as possible, as it will be more difficult after they're deleted. Thank you! Surname: "László" or "de László"?

[edit]

At present, the article uses a mixture of styles to refer to the artist. Is the surname properly "László" or "de László"? Jean-de-Nivelle (talk) 07:39, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
