Professional Career

@Yankees10: Let's discuss this before anymore reverts. Recently got in trouble for a WP:3RR violation. I do believe anything relating to the Chiefs should have a section dedicated section for the Chiefs--Rockchalk717 03:05, 28 April 2017 (UTC)

Guess I didn't say why. Pre-draft information (combine results etc) should be its own sub-section in professional career section because it does not directly relate to his draft selection or his career with the Chiefs, however long he plays for them.--Rockchalk717 21:00, 28 April 2017 (UTC)

Jersey Number

Patrick Mahomes jersey number is 4 according to his Snapchat as well as his jersey that he posted earlier today as well as his Locker, which is located next to Alex Smith. Please stop changing it to no number. Thank you. KYOUNG6 (talk) 07:16, 2 May 2017 (UTC)

Trivia

I have again removed the trivia regarding Heinz 57 offering Mahomes ketchup if he reaches 57 touchdowns. The information is completely trivial in nature, has zero encyclopedic value, and falls afoul of WP:NOTNEWS (a Wikipedia policy) which states "Wikipedia considers the enduring notability of persons and events.he will be in the hall of fame. While news coverage can be useful source material for encyclopedic topics, most newsworthy events do not qualify for inclusion. For example, routine news reporting of announcements, sports, or celebrities is not a sufficient basis for inclusion in the encyclopedia." A promotion by ketchup company hardly qualifies as "enduring notability" in the life of a WP:BLP subject. I see that Yankees10 also removed the trivia when it was repeatedly posted by an IP.-- Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 23:49, 15 November 2018 (UTC)

The item is WP:INDISCRIMINATE info and does not belong in an encyclopedic article. It could go in a blog or facebook page though. MarnetteD|Talk 00:02, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

Mentioning that he's African-American three separate times.

It's kind of odd. Not completely relevant or informative. The fact it's mentioned three times within a span of 3 sentences that he's African-American, it's written almost like it's a bad thing.

If it were a staple of his, or rather something most people know him by, then it would be important to add because it's part of his story. In this case its just added for the sake of it rather than it actually being informational.

If you feel it's necessary to include, split it up and move parts to his 2018 (AP NFL MVP) and 2019 (Superbowl MVP) professional career synopsis respectively. Keep just one sentence pertaining to his race in the top section instead of an entire paragraph dedicated to it. It's lazy writing.

In case you're wondering what I'm referring to:

"Mahomes, along with Lamar Jackson, Cam Newton and Steve McNair, is one of only four African-American quarterbacks to win the AP MVP award.....Mahomes was awarded the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player for his performance, becoming the second African-American quarterback to win the award after Doug Williams. He is the third African-American quarterback to win the Super Bowl after Doug Williams and Russell Wilson and the second to win Super Bowl MVP." Viiz1 (talk) 01:28, 12 February 2020 (UTC)

Correction needed.

I can’t edit this.

In his 2018 campaign it is mentioned that PMII had a 478 yards game. Vs rams

In the 2019 campaign they say that week 2 440~ yards was his highest yards number to that date.

A very similar issue pop again talking if week 10 vs Titans 2019

It’s contradictory — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A00:A040:183:720A:EDAF:F860:CAD:6621 (talk) 14:58, 24 February 2020 (UTC)

sack total

How about adding the number of sacks he's taken to his stats column?72.174.71.134 (talk) 03:58, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

That doesn't seem like a notable statistic for a Wikipedia article. →Wordbuilder (talk) 05:30, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
The Dan Marino page seems to think so. That low sack total (percentage) is what differentiates a number of passers in the game.72.174.71.134 (talk) 05:51, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
I see it listed as one of the active records for Marino but it does not appear as one of the statistics in the infobox. Does Mahomes currently hold a record in this regard that is not listed in the article? →Wordbuilder (talk) 17:09, 8 December 2020 (UTC)

Change Cover Image?

Hey fellow editors-

I think that we should change the cover image for this article. The current image shows him from a bad angle, and...I don't know, it's not the best. His face is barely visible since the picture was taken from above. However, we all have to agree on a new one if we even decide to change it. I would be fine either way because this is merely a matter of my opinion. It's not urgent, or even important; it is just a suggestion.

However, if some editors agree with me, maybe we could start finding the best replacement image.

Billiestan123 (talk) 18:43, 17 November 2020 (UTC)

Billiestan123, Wikipedia has limited access to images as they need to comply with our licensing. If you have an image available to be uploaded to Wikipedia please share it here, otherwise, this seems moot. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 18:50, 17 November 2020 (UTC)

Yeah, I know about copyright. I don't want to get in trouble for using a copyrighted image. I don't have an image that I own, but I'm wondering if we could look through the images that we already have or find a licensed one. Billiestan123 (talk) 19:11, 17 November 2020 (UTC)

I mean, I’m open to a change in image if one is available. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 23:21, 17 November 2020 (UTC)

Of course! I think that actually finding an image that complies with the licensing is the hard part. Feel free to close this if you want; however, we could also start gathering images if you want to go in that direction as well. Billiestan123 (talk) 03:03, 19 November 2020 (UTC)

Billiestan123, I can message some people on Flickr. Sometimes that works. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 03:37, 19 November 2020 (UTC)

If you could do that, that would be amazing. Also, I won't be responding for the next few hours because I have to go to bed, but I'll get back to this tomorrow! Thanks again. Billiestan123 (talk) 04:20, 19 November 2020 (UTC)

Hey- Is this still on? I think I found an image. It is from Getty Images, and it's licensable. I think we just need to cite the photographer as the source for this image(which we do on Wikipedia anyway). Edit: the license is expensive. I will keep looking. Edit request

The page lists that Mahomes was eligible for the 2014 MLB Draft before saying in the next sentence that he was drafted 37th overall in the 2016 MLB Draft by the Detroit Tigers. He was drafted 37th overall in 2014 MLB Draft, so the second sentence is inaccurate. (You can even verify this by checking the respective draft pages). Please change the 2016 reference to 2014 and update the corresponding link to the 2014 MLB Draft.

Jackson Mahomes

Issue here is do we include in the article that, by name, Patrick Mahomes has a brother named "Jackson"? Seems like we should as he has achieved a level of "notability" both as an internet celebrity and for his recent arrest for sexual assault.[1][2] Secondary issue is mentioning that he has achieved some level of notability for his Tik Tok videos but avoid mentioning his arrest even though that event as had significant national media coverage.EdJF (talk) 16:47, 6 May 2023 (UTC)

@EdJF: His independent notability came as being a social media influencer. His sexual assault case is a big story because he's Patrick's brother. If he was just another every day tik tok star, he probably wouldn't be getting as much attention as he is now for his arrest. I would be ok with a very brief mention of being arrested but I'm not sure if there's a good way to mention the arrest without getting excessively detailed without him having his own page. With Britt Reid's arrest, as an example, it just mentions he was arrested in Andy's page with a link to the detail on Britt's page. There is a big difference between adding six words "...who is a social media influencer" and adding specific details of the allegations because that adds more than just six words. Honestly, I personally would have been ok if you would have stopped at "In May 2023, Jackson was arrested on charges of aggravated sexual battery." Now, others might have a problem with that but I do not.--Rockchalk717 17:54, 6 May 2023 (UTC)

  • Oppose mention of his arrest. I don't see the importance of mentioning his sibling's arrest here.Hey man im josh (talk) 13:40, 15 May 2023 (UTC)
  • Strong oppose, first, stop edit warring. If I see you revert and add this info back on this article again then I will report you to WP:ANEW since this has gone on long enough. Second, his brother's arrest is completely unrelated to him. While Jackson's article redirects to this one, the arrest of Jackson is completely WP:UNDUE since it's not about Jackson. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 13:49, 15 May 2023 (UTC)
Please keep in mind that I opened the talk page discussion for the express purpose of not edit warring and instead trying to reach a consensus on what the article should say about Jackson Mahomes. After a week, only @Rockchalk717 provided a recommendation and I made the edit exactly as he suggested. There’s not much else I can do with regard to being a good Wikipedia editor. Regarding Jackson Mahomes, if the article states that he is a “social media influencer” or “a notable internet celebrity” (previous version) then it should also include his arrest for sexual battery, an event that is much more notable than his TikTok activities. An alternative is to simply mention that Patrick Mahomes has a brother named “Jackson” and leave it at that. As far as elevating this to an admin, I have no issues with that and welcome an administrator to adjudicate the edit. BTW, I don't see an article for Jackson Mahomes or a redirect, either.EdJF (talk) 14:56, 15 May 2023 (UTC)
EdJF, you're edit warring. Stop it please. Drmies (talk) 15:00, 15 May 2023 (UTC)
Very well. I will move on.EdJF (talk) 15:29, 15 May 2023 (UTC)
@EdJF: There is more that you could do. When you open a discussion regarding content that is disputed you should ping those that have been involved in the dispute so that they can partake in the discussion. It seems as though neither Blaze Wolf or I, two users who had disputed the content, were not aware of this discussion until today.
To say that Jackson is more notable for this recent arrest than his previous shenanigans is also misguided and inaccurate. I also disagree with the all or nothing mentality that you seem to have for the mention of Jackson. It gives WP:UNDUE weight in an article that's not even about the individual. The original writing was short, concise, and neutral. Hey man im josh (talk) 15:14, 15 May 2023 (UTC)
Fine. I will move on to other articles.EdJF (talk) 15:31, 15 May 2023 (UTC)
@EdJF: This is exactly what hat I was talking about. While I personally did not have an issue with a very brief mention of his arrest, I did anticipate other editors having an issue with it. And yes you were edit warring with me, strangely about mentioning he's a social media influencer which is unrelated to the arrest despite me explaining the mention is necessary because it establishes he's notable enough to be mentioned. The arrest was only covered in national media because of his brother and him being a social media influencer. If it wasn't for the social media thing, it wouldn't have gotten as much coverage as it did and is not more notable than him being a tik tok star. To determine this we need to look at WP:PERPETRATOR, the notability guideline for the perpetrator (or in this case legally speaking accused perpetrator) of a crime, to be considered notable for being the victim must be "a renowned national or international figure, including, but not limited to, politicians or celebrities" or "The motivation for the crime or the execution of the crime is unusual", neither applies here.--Rockchalk717 15:59, 15 May 2023 (UTC)

Patrick Mahomes is incorrectly listed as black. Though his father is black, his mother is white. Therefore he is actually mixed race and this page should be corrected to reflex his true heritage. As a mixed race person myself I think it’s wrong to ignore any part of one’s heritage to include race or nationality. As proud Red Raider from Lubbock and someone who is friends with many of his former coaches at Texas Tech I can confirm that he describes himself as mixed race.

Thank you for your consideration in this matter and for the incredible access to information that Wikipedia provides the entire world.

You aren't getting it, it doesn't matter that his mother is white, period. He has a black father, so he's biracial and can identify as African-American if he wants to. To have that aspect of the article removed, find something that states that he identifies as white and not African-American. Hey man im josh (talk) 02:58, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
You are the one not getting it, read your own comment telling me to find something proving he claims to be white. I never said that. You did. My goal is always accuracy, like honesty it’s the best policy. This is why I don’t get involved in the internet as a rule. Made the mistake of posting here, first time I’ve posted anywhere. Ever.

At this point I'm forced to assume you're trolling since you're refusing to understand that his mother being white does not matter if his father is black and he identifies as African-American. I also took 2 minutes of time to actually look for what he identifies as and it was extremely easy to verify that he identifies as black: 1, 2, 3. Hey man im josh (talk) 03:09, 1 December 2023 (UTC)

Not trying to right a great wrong, as this is in no way a great wrong nor have I said as such. Once again, just trying for accuracy. Were the opposite statement to have been made about his race I’m certain you would have an entirely different response to the request. Before I made the request I read the statements from Patrick you mentioned earlier. They were made during the immediate post George Floyd death timeframe, so what would you expect anyone to say the ? No I’m not black, I’m white? Every time he comments on his race and discusses being black the very next sentence states his mother is white and he’s proud of who he is. Just like I am. This discussion has taught me that accuracy is unimportant here, opinions and agendas are. Makes me sad that people of mixed race must choose a parent to claim as the more important heritage. There are so many of us out here, and I don’t know any that would do that. Once again thanks for your time, sincerely. However there is no need to respond further as you’ve demonstrated to me a total lack of understanding of who we are and what truth means and I’m done trying to convince a clearly white guy what it means to have a biracial upbringing. Best wishes. 2600:1700:1A20:73D0:9913:764D:7C98:C935 (talk) 03:10, 2 December 2023 (UTC)

Race

Patrick Mahomes keeps getting called black. His mom is white and his dad is black. When someone is 50/50 how does the media choose your race? When it fits their narrative? 2603:9001:A200:1289:D89A:560B:C06E:854 (talk) 05:07, 12 February 2024 (UTC)

@2603:9001:A200:1289:D89A:560B:C06E:854: Wikipedia is not a forum. This is not the place to discuss opinions on matters like this. From a Wikipedia standpoint, he is identified as black in the article because Patrick himself identifies as black. He even has expressed pride in his black heritage and has stated his annoyance with people saying he isn't full black. Source is here. Please do not attempt to debate if he is or isn't black with editors as these debates will fall on deaf ears.--Rockchalk717 23:15, 12 February 2024 (UTC)
If someone is biracial they may prefer to identify as one race and that's ok. Mahomes has, in the past, self described himself as a black man, so that's what we describe him as. Hey man im josh (talk) 23:38, 12 February 2024 (UTC)
It's overly simplistic to deal only with "50/50" given the history of rape by slave owners and at least one U.S. president having children with a slave. But I believe the general practice on WP is to go with one's self-identity. —Bagumba (talk) 02:00, 13 February 2024 (UTC)

Info Box inclusion for Mahomes' total yards record in 2022

A few times now Mahomes' info box has had his 2022 total yardage record added and removed, specifically by @Hey man im josh. I agree with the sentiment that it can be seen as a lesser-talked about record compared to others (such as a career leader or season leader in a more specific stat, such as passing yards, passing touchdowns, etc.), however other notable quarterbacks do include such records in their info boxes. For example Josh Allen's page includes records such as: "Most consecutive seasons with 40+ total touchdowns by a quarterback: 4" and "Most games in a season with one passing and rushing touchdown: 11". Both of which, the same argument can easily be made that they are lesser-talked about records that are only included in the info box to boast Allen more. Even Jalen Hurts's page includes super bowl records by a quarterback when Tom Brady's page doesn't include such in the info box (like his record for pass attempts in a super bowl, pass completions in a super bowl, and yards in a super bowl). I am all for removing the lesser-discussed records from info boxes to avoid bloating, however there needs to be a consistency across all player pages. I.e. add it back for Mahomes' info box (as well as the others that are missing it), and leave it on the others' info boxes OR keep it removed from Mahomes' info box but also delete such records from the info boxes of other players. HoodedBlack (talk) 21:16, 20 February 2024 (UTC)

The infobox is for major records only, not for records that have a caveat or are cherry picked. The record is specifically about combined rushing and passing yards, something that's not typically combined for quarterbacks except in the context of a record. WP:WHATABOUT is not a good argument to make for includsion and frankly Josh Allen's page shouldn't have those cherry picked stats included in the infobox either. There are relevant sections for these players for these non-major/cherry picked/multiple conditions to meet this record type stats. However, if you want to talk consistency across a number of pages, the better place would likely have been WT:NFL to start this discussion. Hey man im josh (talk) 21:21, 20 February 2024 (UTC)
See also WP:NFLINFOBOXNOT, which references arbitrary records as something to leave out. Hey man im josh (talk) 21:23, 20 February 2024 (UTC)
For clarification, I was not using Wikipedia:WHATABOUT as an argument to keep the record listed, in fact I stated that I agree with your point that the record is a more obscure record that isn't widely discussed. I only stated that there was a lack of consistency with this record only in the context of quarterbacks. I believed it was more of Mahomes' article being an outlier since the other quarterback pages do include such records and I thought this talk page was the appropriate place to discuss such topic, since a question of consistency with regard to a Super Bowl stat table was also discussed above, in this talk page. However, I stand corrected in that Wikipedia talk:NFL is the more appropriate forum and I apologize for starting the topic here. Thank you as well, for the clarification on that and as well as the clarifying information on keeping the info box records consistent. HoodedBlack (talk) 22:10, 20 February 2024 (UTC)

Super Bowl stat table

@Rockchalk717 @Yankees10 Yo. Since Mahomes is set to make his fourth Super Bowl start, I wanted to revisit the idea of readding the Super Bowl stat table for his page. I added the table following his third appearance last year but it was reverted due to a lack of consensus (see revision history of March 22, 2023). HappyBoi3892 (talk) 01:40, 30 January 2024 (UTC)

I have mixed feelings about it. Four is a lot and I love that he's starting in #4 as a Chiefs fan. Number 4 could justify one but I still go back to the fact that Tom Brady has one because he played in what is an entire career's worth of playoff games for some quarterbacks in just the Super Bowl. I'll put it this way, if one other person says they like the idea, I'll say yes to it, but for now it's a no for me.--Rockchalk717 04:37, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
I think the table should be added. I believe that four appearances is a solid enough sample size and since Mahomes has played differently in Super Bowls than other playoff games, I think it would be helpful to include. Ben Roethlisberger previously had a table with 3 appearances. For all of this I believe all quarterbacks with 3-4+ Super Bowl starts should get a table. Was actually logging on to create a table lmao. GoGreen2024 (talk) 20:53, 30 March 2024 (UTC)
My initial thinking is that the per game logs are at stat EL links. What is the objective criteria for inclusion? Is there a cutoff? —Bagumba (talk) 15:07, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
Observation based on List of Super Bowl starting quarterbacks#Quarterbacks with multiple Super Bowl starts:
So...
  • 4+ starts – 5 of 7 players (5 of 8 if you count Patrick)
  • 3+ starts – 6 of 13 players
  • 2+ starts – 6 of 21 players
I'm for consistency and setting a threshold if we want to do this, I don't really have a side. Hey man im josh (talk) 15:41, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
And what about non-QBs? —Bagumba (talk) 15:44, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
Well, if we look at this query on StatMuse...
  • Stephen Gostkowski – 6 games played – No SB table (kicker)
  • Mike Lodish – 6 games played – No stat tables at all (defensive tackle)
  • Cornelius Bennett – 5 games played – No playoff or SB table (linebacker)
  • Tedy Bruschi – 5 games played – No playoff or SB table (linebacker)
  • Patrick Chung – 5 games played – No SB table (safety)
  • Larry Cole – 5 games played – No stat tables at all (defensive lineman)
  • Marv Fleming – 5 games played – No stat tables at all (tight end)
  • Rob Gronkowski – 5 games played – No SB table (tight end)
  • Cliff Harris – 5 games played – No stat tables at all (safety)
  • Charles Haley – 5 games played – No stat tables at all (linebacker / defensive end)
  • D.D. Lewis – 5 games played – No stat tables at all (linebacker)
  • Matt Light – 5 games played – No stat tables at all (offensive tackle)
  • Devin McCourty – 5 games played – No playoff or SB table (safety)
  • Glenn Parker – 5 games played – No stat tables at all (offensive lineman)
  • Preston Pearson – 5 games played – No stat tables at all (running back)
  • Bill Romanowski – 5 games played – No stat tables at all (linebacker)
  • Matthew Slater – 5 games played – No stat tables at all ("wide receiver" / special teams, really just special teams)
  • Charlie Waters – 5 games played – No stat tables at all (safety)
  • Rayfield Wright – 5 games played – No stat tables at all (offensive tackle)
  • Adam Vinatieri – 5 games played – No SB table (kicker)
@Bagumba: Just a quick look at each page, so I may have missed one or two. Hey man im josh (talk) 16:24, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
I'd lean toward standard regular season and general playoff stats for all players, and leave the specific game logs to stats sites. I'm neutral on Brady being an outlier. I don't believe the other major U.S. sports projects have finals-specific stats for players in their pro leagues. —Bagumba (talk) 16:35, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
@HappyBoi3892: Sorry totally forgot this conversation was taking place. Bagumba makes a solid point. I've removed a few of them myself over the years. Consistency is a key thing. For me, I prefer either the total elimination of it, or leaving it to quarterbacks who start like 6 or more. It doesn't make much sense to include it for non-quarterbacks as their greatness isn't as frequently measured by Super Bowls, Troy Aikman is the best example of this with mediocre regular season stats but is in the Hall of Fame because he won 3 Super Bowls.--Rockchalk717 22:05, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
"I prefer either the total elimination of it, or leaving it to quarterbacks who start like 6 or more" Ironically Brady is the only QB with 6+ starts lol. I do agree with the idea of having Brady as the only one with the table (and maybe Elway since he has 5) but I think Mahomes is a unique case because he's an active player. Although basing this on potential future success probably isn't the way to do this, he's likely to have more Super Bowls appearances under his belt before he retires. HappyBoi3892 (talk) 01:51, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
@Rockchalk717 Forgot to ping. Mb HappyBoi3892 (talk) 06:13, 12 February 2024 (UTC)
Yes and that was intentional. Once again, Tom Brady has played in more Super Bowls than some quarterbacks have played in the playoff games period (Joe Theismann, Fran Tarkenton, Mark Rypien, Rich Gannon, Matt Stafford, Boomer Esiason, Drew Bledsoe, Kerry Collins, and Cam Newton to name a few).--Rockchalk717 23:25, 12 February 2024 (UTC)
