"normally"

[edit]

To say that folks who do not get 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place would not "normally" be eligible for a trophy presumes that participation trophies are not normal. They seem to be quite normal these days, and to presume otherwise is WP:POV. "Normally" might be replaced by "otherwise". Also, the specific association with Gen Y isn't sufficiently supported by sources; the Journal of Surgical Education source is only contrasting them with Gen X, and does not compare them to Gen Z, who at the time of the article (2009) were not yet of the age for surgical residency and thus not of interest to the article; the Inc. source is similarly focused on the workforce from 2017, when most of the "Millenials" would be in the workforce but Gen Z not yet. I have retired from article editing, but I leave those thoughts for others to consider and possibly address --Nat Gertler (talk) 15:42, 16 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Also, I should note that participants who do win or who are on winning teams may also get a participation trophy, so that aspect of the opening should be changed. And the recent edition of someone's interpretation of the non-trophy meaning of "participation trophy" is off-topic for this article, which is about actual participation trophies. --Nat Gertler (talk) 04:15, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
