Problem with "first feature film debut" in the intro/summary section

[edit]

Hello, this is my first time adding to a Talk page, so I hope I'm doing this right.

I think there are a couple of problems with a statement in the summary/intro section, third paragraph. I am editing it, but wanted to leave a note about my reasoning for making the change. The sentence in question reads "Oswald made his first feature film debut through his cameo appearance in the 2013 animated short Get a Horse!."

First problem: It's redundant/inaccurate to say "first feature film debut." One can only debut once, as this means "first appearance," so a first debut is redundant at the very least. Easily fixed by removing the word "first," except that...

Second problem: I'm not sure appearing in a short film before a feature counts as appearing in a feature film. It seems the short before the feature is by its very definition NOT the feature presentation. Sometimes a short film is called a "short feature," but in this context I don't believe that's the meaning that is conveyed. Wikipedia's definition of "feature film" says it should be a film "with a running time long enough to be considered the principal or sole film to fill a program." Therefore, I don't believe Oswald made his feature film debut in Get a Horse!, which is a stand-alone Disney short film with a running time of just 6 minutes. It was shown before the feature film Frozen on its original theatrical release, but Oswald does not appear in Frozen.

I am going to edit the sentence in question from the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit entry to say "Oswald made his first appearance in a Disney animated production in 85 years through his cameo appearance in the 2013 animated short Get a Horse!." (The 85 years statement is taken from the Get a Horse! Wikipedia page.) --107.0.93.162 (talk) 19:14, 11 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Replace page image

[edit]

Should the page image be changed to reflect Oswald's recent appearances in media like Epic Mickey? (Oinkers42) (talk) 03:50, 11 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Well, no (IMO), but don't make this an RfC. You can just boldly change it and see if somebody reverts it. If they do, discuss it here (WP:BRD). If they don't, well then there's not much need to discuss. If you're nervous about just changing the image, open a regular discussion here first (which you've done now, except you used the {{rfc}} template). RfCs are for significant changes or to resolve stalled disputes, and that doesn't seem to apply here (see also WP:RFCBEFORE).
Changing the image doesn't seem appropriate to me, since the "real" Oswald dates from the 1920s and that characterization is how he's best known. A more current image could be added, but I wouldn't change the infobox image. But that's just my uninvolved opinion. There are 139 watchers on this page; remove the {{rfc}} tag and talk it out locally. I'm sure you'll find consensus forms easily. — JohnFromPinckney (talk / edits) 14:20, 11 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • @JohnFromPinckney: Sorry about that, I have seen so many cases where discussions like this get ignored entirely. I thought this was a good solution. As for the image, the infobox image is currently based on the Walter Lantz era, where he was a more minor character, the current, and also original image of Oswald, is more something akin to this [1]. This image seems more recognizable than the current infobox image. (Oinkers42) (talk) 15:28, 11 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@(Oinkers42) Yes/no. Aside from the incredibly horrifying fase when Oswald was realistic, Oswald has stayed more-or-less the same throughout his history. 1927 Oswald and 2013 Oswald look the same (unless you count the cg appearances) Oversized Lego spoon 64 (talk) 23:06, 5 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Are you sure about Tex Avery?

[edit]

How do you know Tex Avery voiced Oswald? There’s no evidence that he voiced the character yet I consider the Various voices behind Oswald in the 1932-38 shorts to be “Unknown” (except for Bernice Hansel) Controlrabbit (talk) 12:10, 9 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

"Ozzie"

[edit]

@Kazachstanski nygus you added "Ozzie" as an alternate name for Oswald and cited a title card from Ozzie of the Mounted. I objected that in this context "Ozzie" is the name of a role not the name of the character, to which you replied "Ozzie is short for Oswald, not some role in Mounted Police". But the title card you cite reads "Oswald the Lucky Rabbit in Ozzie of the Mounted". To me this clearly indicates that the character's name is "Oswald the Lucky Rabbit" and the title of the short is "Ozzie of the Mounted". I have not watched the short but I assume his name within the short is "Ozzie", but regardless of that, the title card is clearly saying that the character's name is "Oswald the Lucky Rabbit", not "Ozzie". CodeTalker (talk) 19:22, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@CodeTalker I'm sorry but I really can't understand why you're implying that these two names are somehow separate from each other. Walt Disney didn't want to repeat "Oswald" in the title so he used acceptable by him short form of Oswald's name, "Ozzie", which means that Walt Disney himself was ok with using "Ozzie" as alternative name of Oswald. Kazachstanski nygus (talk) 19:43, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that the role in this short was named "Ozzie" because it is short for Oswald, but that does not justify saying that "Ozzie" was in general used as a name for the character. Is there any use of "Ozzie" outside of this short? If not, we should not say that Ozzie was a name for the character. CodeTalker (talk) 21:12, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@CodeTalker Here's another one use of this short [2]. Also our article titled Oswald the Lucky Rabbit filmography informs us that there was a cartoon named "Ozzie of the Circus". Kazachstanski nygus (talk) 12:13, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
