My grandfather Felix Gerada built the Orpheum when he came back from USA back in the 30's. Mum was still very young as she was born in Detroit. She always describes the Orpheum as majestic in it's peak. She mentions how elegant the entrance was. She also states that besides the theatre grand dad had built a couple of places next door in order to house the opera singers who came there due to the fact that there were no hotels at the time. It's worth noting too how seriously he took health and safety when you see all the different exits present. In this way no one would be trapped there in case of any fire. The place had great acoustics. I have fond memories.
I would like to add that it's worth while mentioning that the Orpheum is a scheduled building because there is a very important painting of Orpheus on the ceiling painted by Bonnici Cali. Furthermore all around you will find the busts of famous Maltese composers, writers etc Nannu Felix was a true believer in Maltese talent. He truly believed in the Maltese and their talents and gave them pride of place all around the auditorium. To date these busts are still there in the Orpheum. Unfortunately the building has fallen into disarray and the beautiful walls have been painted over and the two balconies which adorned either side of the stage were removed. It's a pity that this piece of our Maltese history is not given the importance it should.
