This article needs a thorough review. All in good time. For now, can someone confirm it really did go from the Australian Opera Company to the Elizabethan Theatre Trust Opera Company before changing back to the Australian Opera? The chronology from the article seems to be:

  • 1956, formed as the Australian Opera Company
  • 1957, changed its name to the Elizabethan Theatre Trust Opera Company
  • 1970, changed to the Australian Opera
  • 1996, changed to Opera Australia. JackofOz 12:19, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Take a look at the Usher article referenced in Ext. links; it confirms the 2 final steps. I'll get some more together on the other changes. Strange as they may be, all are verifiable and represent the convoluted history of the company in its early years.

Also, look at the 2nd external link article on the operas presented from 1970 to 1996. It clearly shows the progress of the names. Wierd maybe, but true. Vivaverdi 22:52, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

And it's all confirmed in this "Playbill" piece:

The last three paragraphs of this section have nothing to do with Opera Australia - they are about a new Victorian Opera Company. Doesn't really belong here?h—Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.183.154.97 (talk) 02:37, 6 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

3rd busiest?

[edit]

Is it really the 3rd busiest opera company in the world after the Met and Covent Garden? I would have thought that there would be others ahead. The Wiener Staatsoper, La Scala, Paris Bastille spring to mind. Any views? Orbicle 12:18, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It depends upon what "busiest" means... More productions? Then most German houses surely do more?? More performances? The same proably applies, ditto months/weeks/days of performances in a given year. I guess that someone needs to do some research. Vivaverdi 14:56, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I have done quite a few changes to this page over the last few days. My reasons are that much of the former material has been deposited 'ad hoc', and many of the major figures and events of the last decade have been overlooked, while other minor figures have been named and minor events mentioned. I have also expanded the references to Simone Young and to Richard Hickox. Richard suffered the indignity of having more said about him on this page courtesy of his critics than actually from the company's point of view, something which was unacceptable in a factual context. His sudden death in November 2008 is both a tragedy and a terrible shame.
I have gone ahead and started the section about Modern Australian Opera, which has been totally overlooked until now. Although I have mentioned the main stage Opera House and OzOpera performances, there have been a host of smaller workshop pieces which although worthy, need not be mentioned. I have referenced all I could to Oxenboulds book about the OA and to other sources. Not all of Oxenboulds bibliography is correct - Lindy and Eighth Wonder are missing from his repertoire lists for example. I have also shortened the long and outdated OzOpera/Schools company contribution. It almost deserves a page to itself due to the amazing work it does in rural and regional Australia.
The difficult thing however has been in straightening out some glaring errors; (the existence of OA is fraught with infighting and catfights), but facts are facts - the VSO merger was caused by 'a mountain of debts' and a financial collapse not by 'a Government recommendation' for amalgamation. I would also hope that extraneous details can be kept out of this page. It is true that many people feel very keenly about their national opera comapny, and would like to be mentioned as if in some Holy Operatic roll call, but in an encylopedia the bare facts about the company and its history are sufficient.
